Default USB otg

Hi, today I bought some USB otg cable to connect to my smartphone. I have been reading some stuff about host device (A device) and slave device (B device) regarding this issue. When I plug the cable to my phone I plug it from the b side of the cable, which means my phone is acting like a peripheral and it was not supose to manage the USB bus. But when I connect a flash drive to the A side the phone can still manage the link. Is it normal? What am I missing? Thanks

AFAIK -
USB otg adapter is meant to be the "host".
so both the ext. flash and the phone are slaves.
