Default [Q] Limitations of Tethered root

I understand that the potential new exploit is "tethered" and means that if you reboot your device you will no longer have root. I am not clear on how that limits the things you can do. Some specific questions:

Can I edit the audio file that plays the annoying boot sound effects so it is quiet upon boot? Will that persist without root and without popping up constant error messages?

Can I install a different recovery? Custom roms? Safestrap?

I am trying to determine if rooting provides significant value to me at this time. Thanks.

Honestly I'm not sure but I think the new update 4.4.3 may close this exploit making it a mute point. I guess we will have to see what the devs say when they get into the update.

Combining jcase's exploit with MotoWpNoMo will allow you to gain permanent root. Here is a quick write up on how to do that.
