Can I make a downgrade from 4.4.2 to 2.3.7 just by recovery flashing zip and not going via Odin?

No, due to different partition sizes its not possible.

Guys told you well, use Odin, (last compatible version is 1.83) for any stock ROM and PIT file for repartition.
