All I'm seeing on my screen is "firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please help

At the top left it says:

ODIN MODE
PRODUCT NAME: SGH-I337
CURRENT Binary : Samsung official
SYSTEM STATUS: Official
knox kernel lock 0x0
knox warranty 0x0
csd-conf-lsb 0x30

Go into download mode and start over from Step 1. But this time try a different USB port on your computer.

No. Not all of the process. But if you're on the NB1 ROM then you can easily backup your data in SS, wipe in SS, flash the NC1 ROM, Odin Kernel, restore data in SS. Not too bad in terms of time if you download the files and make a backup ahead of time.

Will likely be patched with the 4.4.3 update, we may have to go back to our workarounds.
