I'm having some problems with it- maybe I've done something wrong... I successfully got root (checked it with Root Checker), but now my phone keeps locking up and I have to reset it to wake it up. Right now I am charging it back up so I can repair it (hopefully) with PC Companion.

At least ROMs which don't need a custom kernel. Flashing a different kernel requires an unlocked bootloader.

Yes, this really works with my japanese variant of Z1 Compact (Z1f SO-02F, see attached image)

No custom kernel, Stock ROM, Full root access, No /system r/o reboot issue

But it take some more step then proposed, especially the main exploit apk file

Actually yes (on the computer), since it needs to download tr.apk. You can also manually download it from towelroot.com and place it inside files directory.
