Default EMS?

How can I enable EMS on the phone? When I try to send a 160+ character message to someone on the verizon network or they send one to me it keeps breaking it up. It should be kept as one block of text since verizon to verizon uses ems.

This isn't necessarily an answer but a workaround, I've heard that "Handcent SMS" breaks up your 160+ messages in two then sends them separately. If all else fails maybe you can try that.

But from my experience it seems weird because "sometimes" it sends them in two automatically and "sometimes" it doesn't

Actually, I have a related problem... For some reason, whenever I write a message that's longer than one text, it shows me the count of how many messages it takes up.... but when I send it, the other person NEVER gets it. Isn't it supposed to break it up into separate messages? It doesn't send it at all.
