Try this, remove battery and sim card then hold the buttons to get into download/recovery mode and while your holding the buttons replace the battery. if that doesn't work then try a jig, you can buy one or make your own. info here http://forum.xda-developers.com/gala...inary-t1604707

Try using the method provided by pryerlee but leave it on download mode. Use Odin or Heimdall to flash a new kernel and just after it reboots, quickly go into recovery mode where you should factory reset and delete the caches. Hope this helps!

You should still have download mode as it is hard coded into memory. Maybe try with a USB JIG and you can make one if you don't want to buy one. http://www.xda-developers.com/androi...uild-your-own/

I can get to download mode, but with various PC's and laptops, different USB cables (including the original Samsung) the phone does not appear as a device.

Any ideas?

You used the same root package? If so, then maybe you flashed a wrong kernel.

Did you solve the problem meanwhile after 2 weeks?
Is Samsung USB driver properly installed on your PC?

I inserted the battery while booting into download mode. This after I left the phone to charge for a while.
