Has anyone tried disabling (via Turn Off) the stock Messaging app? (com.android.mms) I use Hangouts as my default sms/mms app, but I've noticed Messaging still shows up in the list of apps using up my battery - not a lot, but still.. Wakelock Detector shows the usage as being for "new message notification LCD on", so I wanted to check first. I don't care whether my screen turns on when I receive text messages, I usually just look to see if the LED is flashing blue or not instead of waking up the screen anyway (I have an AT&T Note 3, rooted on stock 4.4.2).

You def. can turn off the stock app. But in your case actually I am not certain that Hangouts is self contained and does not rely on the stock app. I have though several times in the past frozen the stock app because I use other sms apps.

Yep freeze stock messaging app... I stopped using hangouts for sms because of the group message cpu usage bug, but it worked fine... I also used Lightflow to customize the led actions
