You didn't follow the procedure correctly bro.
You need to boot into recovery from download mode itself. If you allow the phone to reboot the newly flashed recovery will be overwritten by stock recovery.

Cannot Flash
It is like when you are lost and have to ask for directions. Believe me I have tried everything I can think of before I stop and ask for help.

I am trying to root Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note 2 SCH-I605 4.4.2 which had never been rooted before.

Using Odin 3.7 It gets to "start Flashing" but then it stops and says Fail.

I have tried
Auto Reboot checked and unchecked
I have downloaded several different copies of Odin 3.7 and phlz_touch_6.48.4-n7100.tar.md5
I have tried different cables and different USB ports.
I have tried updating drivers
I have enabled USB Debugging
I have Bootloader: I605VRUFND7
Any ideas?
Thanks
Michael

You have a locked bootloader to prevent flashing. What you can do is give a try to towelroot.apk and check if that works, if not, ask someone in the VZW note 2 forums and some recognized developer might be able to help better on this case.

You can't root Verizon note 2 with this method. It's only for International version of Note 2 N7100. Please visit your device specific forum or else you will brick your device.
