What a shame! you are totally corrrect, my Z2 is exactly the same, I took some amazingly clear video in a club the other night, the camera captured the scene in low light so well shockingly good video BUT when I listened the next day the sound is totally distorted ruining the videos!
I downloaded a Sound meter app on my Z2 and the wifes Galaxy S5, side by side they both give completely different DB reading, The sony is WAY too high! if you make a sound the sound meter jumps right up, where are the Galazy S5 is more stable. Unfortunately i cant find any setting in the phone to change the microphone sensitivity. so the problem is a serious problem that we are stuck with! SUCKS!!
SONY really need to fix this with an update!
i am not 100% sure but i think Doomkernel mod has the option to adjust mic sensibility, so this would fix the problem
edit, just seen that this was already posted.
also, i wonder if there is an app that could do that. since not anybody want to unlock their bootloaders or root
