In *every* case, root didn't work, and the superuser.apk which was deposited in /system/app seemed to not be recognised by the rom as an executable, and didn't show up in the app drawer. The zip files all checked out good: no corruption.

In the end, I installed SuperSU from Google Play, which worked perfectly (and I even successfully installed it as a system app, by choosing this option from within the app itself).

By the way, the vanilla rascarlo vanilla rom referenced in the OP works perfectly, with none of these problems.

Hopefully this helps someone else who is struggling with this!

Hey!

Change the kernel and install the root. It was a error of stock kernel.
My Devices:
Nexus One: 2.3.7 CyanogeMod + Dirty Kernel
Galaxy Nexus [GSM}: 4.4.4 Shiny Rom (stock) + f2fs + Dirty_V Kernel (Amazing!)
Nexus 5: "L" Development Preview
Nexus 7 (2012): 4.4.4 Stock + f2fs + Lego Kernel

Hmmmm... I'm pretty sure I reproduced the problem even after flashing m-kernel a69. No matter, I'm happy that the rom is running nicely rooted now

I used the zip file to format f2fs because I couldn't see how to do it in TWRP and it only did system and cache. The option in TWRP is under Wipe, Advanced Wipe, select the partition, then choose Repair or Change File System to change it to f2fs. There was some weird behavior with TWRP: when you convert the partitions, it then displays them in lowercase. I had to redo the format a couple of times to get it to stick for the cache partition. I found the best thing to do is to convert the partitions, reboot into recovery again, then check them. If they're correct, you can install your rom. If not, redo the steps.
