My kindle updated to the latest amazon OS version.
I did all this right on my kindle
1. I downloaded ES file explorer through amazon.
2. I went to towelroot.com and clicked the TR button.
3. Opened ES file explorer clicked on downloaded and installed TR.apk
4 Opened TR app.
5. Rooted succesfully
6. Downloaded safestrap
7. Downloaded thor gapps rom
8. Installed safestrap
9. Opened safestrap
10. Created rom slot
11. Backup my stock rom to first rom slot
12. Created second rom slot
13. Flashed gapps rom
14. Booted into gapps rom and NOW I HAVE FULL USE OF AOSP! google play and services!!!!!!
I don't know what people are talking about.
BOTH ROOT AND THIS ROM WORK ON THE LATEST VERSION OF AMAZON OS
I just downloaded a launcher from google play and its like I have a nexus 7 in my hand. I love it!
update all you want.

Apparently safestrap is the key then. I'm on Apollo. That's what I'm having a tough time finding. Safestrap and gapps for Apollo.

That's what I'm looking for. To have the Kindle but be able to use it like a regular Android tablet. Don't know why it's tough to do. It's not like fire is a new OS. Is it because I'm on 3.2.5 and the 8.9 with Apollo?

Doesn't matter that you have 8.9" Apollo it should work regardless just use this rom http://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=23501681358560449 instead of the Thor rom and use the Apollo version of safestrap and follow the Same steps. All I did was try it and it worked flawlessly. Make sure you make a back up of your stock rom first.

Boy. I just realized that I don't have have recovery and an SDcard. I'm used to doing everything directly from my phone/phones. I'm not a newb. But with the Kindle I am. So how would I back up the system?

So just to confirm, will safestrap work with my Kindle Fire HDX 14.3.2.5 tablet. Just wanted to make sure as I don't want to brick it. It cost to much to get another one, but want it to be a more proper android tablet.

I would not recommend it's use on a 16 gig tablet. You simply don't have a lot of space to work with. I have the current version of HDX 8.9 software rooted with towel and after a bit of sideloading and downloading from various sources including 1Mobile and Android cowboy I have chrome, play store. (install Vending.apk in system/apps first!) Youtube and Drive working. along with full amazon functionality. It took a fair amount of reboots and simply just leaving things alone for awhile and then things just started working properly.

What I did do before I started doing anything was a full factory reset.
