Can you please provide me the 4.4.2 rooted kernel??
Thanks a million!

The search engine is your best friend. Also reading just a couple of posts back all the information you require can be found.
XDA is a development site for people to share but it is The users responsibility to search, find, read and learn to use what is made available here.
Thought maybe this will make it easier.

Stuck at boot recovery

SM G900P phone here. I have read a lot of these forums trying to dig myself out of this hole so i apologize if the same question is answered over and over. I used "CF-Auto-Root-kltespr-kltespr-smg900p.tar.md5" via Odin and am stuck at a "Recovery booting" screen. I have tried it a few times to no avail. I dont care about knox. I tried the philz touch method and odin says the most recent one (6.57.8-klt) is invalid. I was at 4.4.4 before attempting this.

*edited to add i have successfully recovered out of this brick by downloading the stock OS reinstalling. but i still would like to get root.

So, since you are on NK4 already you will have to downgrade your kernel by using Odin to install the NE5 kernel, run towel root, then Odin the nk4 kernel. Install SuperSU and update binaries. Then you are rooted without tripping Knox.

Is a factory reset required between any of the kernel flashes?

Thanks...and where do I flash the kernels to? AP? Do I leave the "Auto reboot" and "F Reset Time" options checked? Anything else? I haven't seen any detailed info on it here...

Curses...the kernel files that are here are .zip...Odin needs .tar. Or...am I not using Odin to flash the kernel? (Am I doing it via the stock recovery?)

Here is the NE5 and NK4 kernel to flash via odin. Unzip the kernel.zip file and there will be 2 folders, one has the NE5 tar and the other has the NK4 tar. Flash them in AP if you are using odin 3.09 or newer. You don't have to check or uncheck those options. Just use what ever odin defaults to.

Thanks..i actually found those last night and did it. One thing i noticed is that my device status is now custom instead of official. Any way to get it back to official, or does it not really matter?

You rooted now so that is why it shows custom. To get back to official you would need to flash the stock tar file, but then you wouldn't be rooted anymore. You can try using the xposed framework and the wanum module to force official status. But that has never worked for me.

it's not that important, and if i ever had to take it into get serviced, i'll unroot and reflash the official firmware. it was more of a curiousity question.

Hey guys,

I am no stranger to rooting devices, but having an S5 that's not paid for yet and having to turn it in when I upgrade, I am terrified of the KNOX bit (it's new territory for me). I would love to just auto-root it and go flashaholic on it like I did with my S2, but I don't want to take the chance in a few months that they won't accept the S5 back because it's been KNOX voided.

So I just want to be sure.. Right now I have 4.4.2, towelrooted. In the last month or so, it somehow managed to flip the Status back to Official (still rooted!), and it downloaded the NK4 OTA update. Now it has been nagging me to install it.. I want to keep root, mainly for TiBu, ad blockers, and de-bloating. So what would be the best way to proceed, WITHOUT tripping KNOX?

I assume running the OTA update will remove root, but I was under the impression that towelrooted S5's wouldn't take the OTA to begin with (I definitely remember seeing the 'unauthorized mod/must update with Kies' warning when I checked for an OTA at one point) so I have no idea what changed that caused it to go back to Official status, and I have no idea how it will behave.. Is it safe to run the OTA? Is there any chance it will preserve root?

Or should I skip the OTA altogether, and just ODIN the NK4 firmware, then go back to the NE5 kernel, towelroot, and then ODIN back to the NK4 kernel?

I've read this thread, I'm just trying to make sure what I want is possible.. What I've read seems to be conflicting.. I want stock 4.4.4, with root, WITHOUT tripping KNOX..

Thanks

One thing you can do is pay for supersu pro and check the option to preserve root through an ota and see if it works. It did on my S4. If it doesn't, you can still use towelroot on nk4. You have to odin the ne5 kernel, root with towelroot, then reinstall the nk4 kernel, install supersu and let the binary update. Then you're good to go. The whole process is done with odin so no tripping knox. The only way knox is tripped, is installing a custom recovery.

So im having problems.

I have a Sprint S5, tried initially using the Philz method and it says it passes but when i reboot the phone into recovery mode its the standard android recovery. So then i tried the Auto-Root methods, various versions and when it reboots i just get stuck in the Recovery Booting mode and have to pull the battery to get it back into downloading mode.

Thanksfully i figured out if i go back to the older tool and flash the Philz again i can atleast get my phone back to a working state, but no matter what I do i cant seem to get this stupid thing rooted.

Any help? Has Sprint/Google pushed something that makes these instructions obsolete?

If it matters this is my info
Software version
G900PVPU1ANE5
Hardware Version G900P.04
Model Number SMG900P
Android Version 4.4.2
Baseband Version G900PVPU1ANE5
Kernel Version
3.4.0-1750661
dpi@SWDD6020 #1
Build Number KOT49H.G900PVPU1ANE5

Really want to get this working asap so i can use my phone as a hotspot, where i am has really slow internet(throttled) but i can get 30Mbps over LTE.

You're on NE5, so just use towelroot. Easy cheesy :)

Well that was unspectacular.. The OTA fails when I try it, so I'm going to have to just ODIN the update anyway. Thanks for the tip on supersu pro though, I didn't even see that preserve root option!

    Root Sprint S5 step-by-step....the following is for the Sprint SM-G900P (S5) and SM-860P (Sport S5) Updated 10/20/2014

*The SM-G900P method has been confirmed to work on the Virgin Mobile branded S5. However, do this at your own risk*

-----> If you would rather watch a video of how to root the S5 check out qbking77's here: http://xdaforums.com/showpost.php?p=52587088&postcount=1

Please thank the owners of the threads in the links for the work put in to post the necessary files to obtain root/hotspot

**As always, I am not responsible for anything that happens to your device. Just follow the easy steps and all will be good.**

*Before you proceed, if you have not taken the official ND2 or NE5 update from Sammy yet and want to then do that now. It is easier to do the update before obtaining root.

    STEP 1 - DRIVERS
Download the Samsung S5 driver and install on your Windows PC: http://www.samsung.com/us/support/owners/product/SM-G900PZKASPR
--->If you are using Linux no additional driver download is required.<---

After you install the drivers, plug in your phone to the PC and make sure it detects your device and loads the drivers properly. Should be able to access your storage. If not, don't proceed because chances are Odin will not recognize the device either. If this happens, try a different usb port, re-booting PC, cable, etc.

    STEP 2 - OBTAIN ROOT SM-G900P (S5)
**Disclaimer.....using CF Auto Root method will trip the Knox counter and can not be undone. This will void the warranty on your device. Towelroot method in itself does not trip the Knox counter.**
There are 2 options for root. Pick whichever you are more comfortable with (my preference is towelroot because it is a faster and safer one click method):

Option 1: **According to the latest info from towelroot thread, this will only work with Kernels dated prior to June 3rd, 2014. May work on newer but chances are not good due to Google supposedly patching the exploit.**

This can be done without the use of a PC. Go HERE, click the symbol, and download the towelroot apk.
After download, install and run. Then, go to Play Store and download/install SuperSU. Run to update binary. Done.

---->For More Adventurous Users....if you want to utilize mod strings for towelroot, install recovery without a PC using Mobile Odin, etc. see HERE Courtesy of fergie716

Option 2: Download Chainfire's S5 Autoroot (Odin included in package): http://download.chainfire.eu/408/CF-Root/CF-Auto-Root/CF-Auto-Root-kltespr-kltespr-smg900p.zip
Then go here and just follow the steps: http://xdaforums.com/showpost.php?p=51421067&postcount=2

    STEP 2 - OBTAIN ROOT SM-G860P (Sport S5)
**Disclaimer.....using the following method to root (currently the only available) will trip the Knox counter and can not be undone. This will void the warranty on your device.**
Download Chainfire's Sport S5 Autoroot (Odin included in package): http://download.chainfire.eu/460/CF-...ts-smg860p.zip
Then go here and just follow the steps: http://xdaforums.com/showpost.php?p=51421067&postcount=2

    STEP 3 - CUSTOM RECOVERY SM-G900P (S5)
**Disclaimer.....flashing a custom recovery will trip the Knox counter and can not be undone. This will void the warranty on your device.**
Download the latest PhilZ CWM Advanced Touch .tar.md5 file (custom recovery): http://xdaforums.com/showthread.php?t=2706253
Take this .tar.md5 file and put in your Odin folder. If you don't have Odin yet then download from here: xdaforums.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=1168421

Then just follow the Odin directions on this page under "How to install with Odin". Just remember you are installing PhilZ and not TWRP but steps are still the same: http://xdaforums.com/showpost.php?p=51450356&postcount=1

    STEP 3 - CUSTOM RECOVERY SM-G860P (Sport S5)
**Disclaimer.....flashing a custom recovery will trip the Knox counter and can not be undone. This will void the warranty on your device.**

    STEP 4 - NANDROID BACKUP
Don't skip----> Now that you have root and a custom recovery, first thing you should do is make a backup in recovery just in case something goes wrong in the future. (hold press Vol Up + Home + Power when powered off to boot into recovery) **I strongly recommend that you backup EFS as well. Keep the backup in a safe place afterwards** Or, you can go HERE, download the tool, and backup EFS with the app. Make sure you have Busybox installed first and put the produced backup in a safe place such as PC hard drive, cloud storage, etc.

    Optional:
Now that you are rooted what is a flashaholic to do?
For a comprehensive list of mods, roms, and add-ons click here: http://xdaforums.com/showpost.php?p=52456762&postcount=1

    Done. Flash away.
    6
Yea for future use you don't need Windows to root the phone and put a custom recovery on. I used Towelroot with the mod strings for newer Samsung phones then used Mobile Odin to flash my recovery image. Alternatively, you can use dd to flash any recovery.img but you need root first. To dd the recovery image use Terminal Emulator, make sure the recovery image (TWRP, Philz, etc) is on the root of your "Main Storage" (SD, not ExtSD) and rename it to "recovery.img" then enter these commands:

    su
    dd if=/sdcard/recovery.img of=/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/recovery

    Links:

Mobile Odin (Use to flash recovery.img or recovery.tar, MUST be rooted before using)

    Mod Strings for Towelroot and How-To Access It (I used 1337 0 1 7380 4 0)
    4
Will confirm just received new S5 in the mail yesterday, fired it up installed Towel root and all rooted. Thanks for this simple and easy way. By far the easiest root I have ever achieved, no computer, no cables, no Odin...
Can't beat that. Thank you for putting this thread together @CCallahan

    Have a great day!

+1..fyi, if you're still on NE5 and take the NK4 OTA you lose root, but Tr gets it right back :)

Just upgraded from the s4 and definitely want to get my s5 rooted... The representative at the store automatically did the updates, so I'm curious will the 2nd option (no pc needed) still work?

Yes, you should be able to root using towelroot without using your PC even with the latest update.

Does this method trip the Knox counter?

On that note, I'm interested in learning more about Knox. My S5 arrives sometime today, and it's the first Samsung I've had since before Android was around. I'm coming from the Optimus G, which is about as easy as it gets.

I'd like to root the phone ASAP, and though I've googled it extensively, I haven't gotten a straight answer to this question: if the Knox counter is tripped, is the warranty on the phone void? If that's the case, should I wait a couple weeks after getting the phone to root it if it'll trip the Knox counter, just in case something is wrong with it and it needs to be replaced?

Thanks to anyone who can answer these questions for me!

Towel root does not trip Knox and here's a good read.
