I'm confused. I'm on ni2 now and never rooted. There's an update available but I haven't taken it.. Do I need to flash nha (step 1) only to take ota back to ni2? Or can I just start at step 3 and flash ncg kernel?

I believe you can take the OTA to NK2 (which is what the OTA is) and flash the NCG kernel and go from there.

That is correct. You should only need to do the whole procedure if you have a custom Rom, or something like that. I was stock, took the OTA to NK2, and started at step 3. It was easy.

I ended up doing that but didn't and haven't yet taken the ota to nk2. If I take that ota will I lose root? Is there a way to keep root after taking that ota?

After you take the OTA, flash the NCG kernel with ODIN and root like normal. Then, after rooted, flash the NK2 kernel in ODIN.
