this is how I did it.

CYGWIN Unpacking TWRP Backup Files

rename:
data.ext4.win to data.ext4.win.tar
system.ext4.win000 system.ext4.win000.tar
system.ext4.win001 to system.ext4.win001.tar

Make a directory in your CYGWIN Home [Username]folder
Example: untar

Use Windows File Explorer go to your CYGWING Home
C:\cygwin\home\carl (your user name will be here)
make any folder you choose
Example:
C:\cygwin\home\carl\untar
and C:\cygwin\home\carl\untar\data ( for data files)

put your renamed data files in a folder named data
C:\cygwin\home\carl\untar\data (this is to keep files separate when unpacked)

While in Explorer put your renamed system files in untar folder

start CYGWIN ( Use the Cygwin Terminal and then you can copy and paste these commands)
cd to untar folder
example:
cd\untar cd untar
do these commands one at a time, it will extract to a folder named system

tar -xvf system.ext4.win000.tar
tar -xvf system.ext4.win001.tar

cd to data
cd untar/data

then do these commands
tar -xvf data.ext4.win.tar
tar -xvf data.ext4.win000.tar
tar -xvf data.ext4.win001.tar
all your data files will extract

if it did not install then you have something wrong. what was the error code? go to advance menu in recovery and send the error log to your sdcard.

also what steps did you do? open up a known good rom installer and verifi you have the correct updater-script and update-binary

There are so many posts out there on how to do this, CYGWIN is the only thing that worked for me. Many thanks!

meta-inf folder
Many thanks for your tutorial. But I 've founded that every meta-inf folder in some roms (which work well with my device) has a bit differences with the others. So will it makes differences to the zip file?

Question Newbie Question
Hi,

Newbie here...I've made a backup using TWRP Manager (rooted). What I can't understand is how to get the system.ext4.win file. I couldn't find my TWRP folder ( using ES FIle Explorer), and using NANDROID Backup, still could not access it. My backup is saved in my external SD card. My ES File Explorer have Root Explorer enabled, but I'm not sure how to open the BACKUP file.

Using TWRP Explorer, when I choose the backup file, it says cannot access file and asked me if it is a TWRP file. But it is.

So...how? I would like to share this backup file as flashable ROM with my Facebook group members, since we don't really like the stock ROM that comes with our phone (Lenovo A916).
