Still looking for a computer-less way to root my G s3.
None of the old methods work.
Any help would be appreciated.

It would have to be a new exploit that works on all Samsung devices with recent updates.....

No offense, but this is rather obvious and not helpful.
I appreciate your efforts and wealth of experience, but that last comment just made me frustrated.
Don't take this personally.

I'm just annoyed that I'm still having this issue after having successfully rooted my phone. Only to screw it up later.

Thanks anyway.

I'm currently looking at the S5 and S6 forums to see if they are getting close to making an apk with one of the newer exploits....cause you are right it's pretty frustrating...

Ok i can get more details in the morning, but the device im working on i know its...
SPH-L710, has TouchWiz 4.4.2
its NJ3. (runs on Boost Mobile, but appears to be a Sprint device, no SIM card)

towelroot does not work on the kernel.

using Odin3 v3.09.exe to flash the custom recovery mods, I've had no success. I am very familiar with using odin and the program actually reports no failures.
The problem is, after I flash the custom recovery, then boot up recovery, it loads up the default recovery (even though odin says it successfully wrote to the recovery partition)

files I have tried
philz_touch_6.48.4-d2lte.tar.md5 (the galaxy s3 variant)
philz_touch_6.15.7-d2lte.tar
philz_touch_6.15.4-d2spr.tar.md5 (the carrier specific)

could this be a result of a locked bootloader? (if thats the case, odin usually reports a failure to flash)

please provide feedback. thank you. this is for a friend im helping for free.

Did you have auto reboot unchecked?
