You can use a different launcher, I'm using nova atm. Or you can edit the Tw launcher apk to 5x5

In keyboard settings > samsung keyboard did you change input from none to continuous input? That's the swipe function. It's off by default.

Once you take the ota it works on some apps but not all. Think its just the browser ot doesn't work on

Fyi DO NOT USE Twrp manger! I know someone who soft bricked their phone flashing the latest Twrp from it ok. Better using a zip from recovery or tar in Odin.
Question was the power button functioning correct b4 flashing this Rom? That is the main part of everything.
Must be the tolte versions?? I've been on 28.6.0 since it was released without any problems. But I'm using the i317 & T889 and both have 2.8.7.0 atm with no issues.

That's kind of ride rude. If you don't fall into those categories (noob or lazy person), then I assume you know how to search xda? Or Google? It's in system ui. You need to decompile it, edit the files in res/layout... namely, status_bar.xml & dimens.xml (line is "carrier" which can also be searched in notepad++). Reduce carrier text size and carrier label height to 0.0dpi. Recompile. Push back into system/priv-app & fix permissions. I'm sure you know what to do from there.
