Has anyone faced something similar, and know what to do to fix this issue?

You need AutoRec v2 to change your bootloader to the KitKat bootloader. I've noticed that you need to be on a Lollipop ROM to install AutoRec v2 though. You could install the Lollipop kdz/tot to do this but make sure you back everything up on a computer or USB OTG. Also there's 2 patches you need to flash before you reboot after installing the ROM which can be found here http://blastagator.ddns.net/d800_rom_patch.php

Flash - ROM-patch-v1.4-lp30f-d800-blastagator-signed.zip

Flash - boot-permissive-lp-d800-devnull-signed.zip

Reboot.

I was on a 5.1.1 caf rom so I downloaded this rom. Did a nandroid backup. Wiped everything. Flashed xdabebs 29a bootstack, rebooted to TWRP, then flashed this rom for my vs980. I've rebooted several times, toggled airplane mode, switched network preferences from global to cdma/LTE to cdma and every combo and back and forth. I've only been able to get LTE without roamimg once. Now I cannot get it again. Did I do something wrong?
