Flipz made this build just for this very issue. u must wipe data and dalvic cache before flashing it though, as u should do with any custom rom before flashing it. anyhow once u have finished the root process i would suggest flashing the rom below or any other custom rom on the forum. this will get u back to stock goodness and still keep u with root.

STOCK BUILD ROOTED
Warning: That build is fixing the Market issues but is breaking 4G.
4G will connect fine with Toast's ROM but it wont connect at all with the stock rooted ROM for some reason.

Has anyone gotten QuickBoot working. I'm assuming that it is missing the same reboot file that you usually have to push to /system/bin.

you shouldn't need fastboot for evo, afaik
If you need help, try IRC #Cyanogenmod in freenode.net
Someone may be able to help you there. I will try, if I'm on.

Quoting again so that those in the know-know what to do.

Thanks for the heads up.

I was thinking to root, but I'll wait for the weekend to end, I'm heading out to a 4G area and want to test it out.

You only have to copy that .zip file to the SD card then flash it in order to root. As far as accessing recovery... Well, I'm not sure on that one.
