Same issue here.

I get "remote :42 custom id check fail" during step 1, still it completes the zip transfer and completes step 1.

When I boot into recovery, I get black screen with red triangle.
My device manager shows the USB storage is getting detected, but step 2 gives error "device not found"

I can see the USB drive letter in My Computer as well, but cannot access it ( if i try to open in in windows explorer it give error " insert device " ).

I am on Asian Unlocked HTC desire with 1.19.xxxx rom and 0.80 Hboot.
Tried it with MAC and Live CD as well, the USB does not get detected during step 2.

Otherwise everything on phone is working just fine.
Adb is working in USB debug mode, device is getting detected, USB works fine otherwise, so its not USB issue either. Any devs out there who can help us?
I will try goldcard method now.

OK guys.
Gold Card worked.
So if anyone else is getting that step 2 error on unlocked devices, go with gold card.

Yup, used windows method with goldcard first. Worked right away.

Looks like issue is with the Asian ( HK, SG and India) handsets (might be with others but cant confirm myself ). Even though these are unbranded and unlocked, they wont root without goldcard.

After "42 custom id check fail" error in step 1, it basically does not continue to unzip and flush the files as it should. The step 1 method complete message is shows as its there in the bat file but that step actually does not complete as it should. You dont see that green progress bar and its all over in 1-2 mins. Many people seems to think they have successfully completed step one and when they proceed to step 2, it gives that "device not found" error and hence it confuses people. It confused me as well for a while.

Hope this helps others who are stuck to root and flash their devices.
Once rooted, flashing to custom roms was as usual.
