Cognition -and other custom roms.

Well i'm new to the whole android scene, i've already managed to flash over to Froyo 2.2 enjoyed fiddling with it for a bit, and now i'm flashing back to the stock as per instructions for the Cognition ROM. My dumbass forgot to back up any of my contacts (couldn't figure out how anyway) amongst everything, so is this going to be an issue? (say I need to return the phone to the store for some reason or another, can I just use the ODIN http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989 and it'll make it look like i never messed with it?)
I know, I know, lots of questions, sorry.
I'm just curious to know if someone can let me know the most stable build of Cognition, because it seems like that's the best custom ROM i can find. I'm looking for being able to side-load apps, get rid of all the ATT bundled crap, and hopefully have a fix for the GPS issue. Froyo 2.2 seemed to work pretty well on the gps, does the Cognition aswell?

I think thats all the questions I can figure for now. Sorry, I'm a noob, but this new phone has me just.. idk. insanely interested with all user base of all these modifications... Just.. It's crazy.

Your contacts will be gone unless hungry were synced to google our saved to you sd. If I can make a suggestion, sync everything with google, so when you flash all you have to do is log into your google account in accounts and sync and all your contacts are loaded.

Cognition is a good rom but I have not tried the most recent builds.

I am on assonance, and axura is worth looking st as well
