The dreaded power button sticking gremlin
I'd read about this happening but hadn't encountered it myself. Until now. My phone is long out of warranty and no insurance, so I was willing to take it apart, but was thwarted by neither of my tiny Philips head electronics screwdrivers being tiny enough.
Officially at the "willing to try anything" point, I dipped a cotton swab in alcohol, as I'd read this as a possible solution somewhere. Rubbed it generously around the edges of the button, then hit it with the canned air. Did this twice. Pumped the button about a dozen times and replaced the battery. To my surprise, the phone booted successfully.
Combination of dumb luck or weird coincidence, I have no clue. It's working again. Fingers crossed that it holds out til December.
