ok. i done effed up. right now i have rasroygbiv's melchizedek rom loaded on my inspire. I then flashed the 20.06.04.06_M radio on my phone without the RIL. It worked. It was a bit slow but it worked. Then I tried flashing the matching RIL and now no data. I then tried the next one down (the 26.06.06.30_M w/ RCData and the AOSP RIL). still no data. All of the MD5's checked out

Thanks for any help. I'm stumped.

Just reflash the rom. No need to wipe data. Just cache and dalvik

From my experience experimenting with this issue on Melchezidek and Redemption, the RIL 2.2.0018G that loads with the ROMs is specific to ICS builds, and other RILs do not work. I'm running RIL 2.2.0018G with radio 26.14.4.28_M with decent results.

Live about 50 miles north of you, and use either Redemption or Mel, depending on the mood. I've had good luck with the official 10.04.03. Also have used the 14.04.28 with good results.

On several roms I've tried flashing the 2.2.0079HM RIL from the OP but when I check it with RIL Infos the RIL hasn't changed. Any ideas?

Is there really any major differences with or with out the rcdata.. I guess it depends on the person?

Try a reboot. RIL Infos may not pick up the change on the fly.

Sent to a tower near you using ClearDroid and XDA app.

After flashing/rebooting nothing changes. I even checked the dates of the ril files with root explorer and it didn't change. Only way I've been able to have the correct rils is to copy them manually then give the correct permissions/ownership via root explorer....

Are you mounting the system partition before flashing?

I've done back to back tests of my hd2 and inspire 4g...both on edge..on t-mobile and the hd2 always gets better speeds even while still on edge.... I don't know if it's because the inspire is an aT&T phone with an at&t radio....so I guess I want to know if anyone can recommend a radio which will work better on t-mobile's bands which are of course different than at&t.......I pondered that perhaps I should use an "international" radio vs a local at&t since some of them also use the 2100mhz bands. I don't even know that the bands really matter since those are for 3g and the phone is limited to edge in my "home area".

Thoughts?

Try a DHD radio... And second the inspire will never get 3g because of its hardware... The inspire is not have a quad band like some of the newer phones that came out... I had to learn this the hard way...

    Frequently Asked Questions
    Q. What is the purpose of this thread?
    A. To provide you with Radio and RIL files known to work with the HTC Inpire. And in doing so, help prevent you from downloading something that could prevent your phone from working properly.

    Q. Why not just go to the Desire HD thread for Radio and RIL files?
    A. Because we own an Inspire. While these phones are almost identical, the software used on each is NOT always compatible. This includes Radio images.

    Q. What is a Radio?
    A. This essentially is what picks up your signal for data/voice transmission. Without this, you have no data, and no voice connection.

    Q. What are the risks of flashing a radio?
    A. The risks vary, depending on your phone model. For the HTC Inspire, the risks are a phone that will not work on the network. To fix this issue, just simply flash a different Radio. In some cases, on some phones, you could end up with a "brick."
***NOTE: At this moment, there are no 'reported' cases of anyone's Inspire being 'bricked' by simply installing a Radio or RIL.

    Q. What is a "brick?"
    A. A brick is when you render an electronic device useless. It then becomes about as useful as a brick.

    Q. What is a RIL?
    A. Radio Interface Library. "This provides an abstraction layer between Android telephony services (android.telephony) and radio hardware. The RIL is radio agnostic, and includes support for Global System for Mobile communication (GSM)-based radios." This is also why, you will find in some cases, more than one suggested RIL for a radio. In the most basic of terms, this is the link between your hardware and software on your phone. Think of it as device drivers. You can use other RIL files with your radio, but having matched pairs 'could' warrant better battery life, and better signal/data strength stability.

    Q. How do I know which radio is best for me?
    A. You don't. Plain and simple. A radio, for the most part is location based. What works best for you, may not be best for me. This is a trial and error type deal. I suggest changing your radio, and running it for a day or two, until you find what works best for you.

    Q. What should I test after flashing a Radio/Ril combo?
    A. Please refer to this post, by henrybravo.

    Q. How do I check my current Radio version?
    A. From your home screen, press MENU, then SETTINGS, then ABOUT PHONE. Now look for your BASEBAND VERSION

    Q. How do I check my current RIL version?
    A. There are 3 primary methods for doing this. They are listed below.
*Method 1. Use the APK attached to POST 51.
*Method 2. From terminal, type the following:
    Code:
    su getprop "gsm.version.ril-impl"
*Method 3. From command prompt/ADB, type the following:
    Code:
    adb shell getprop "gsm.version.ril-impl"

    Q. How do I install these files?
    A. Radio - Download the PD98IMG.zip file. Place this file on the root of your SD card. Reboot to bootloader. When prompted, press the Volume Up button to install. Then reboot.

RIL - Download the RIL file. Reboot to recovery. Select the "mounts" option, and then mount /system. Now select "flash zip from SDcard." Navigate to where you downloaded the file and install the zip. Then reboot.

    Q. How do I check the MD5 Sum after my download has finished?
    A. Please remember that the MD5 Sums listed are simply for checking the integrity of the download itself, to make sure nothing got corrupted while downloading. To check the MD5 Sum, I suggest using
Astro File Manager. From Astro, navigate to the downloaded file. Long press the file. when the menu pops up, select DETAILS.

    Q. What is an MD5 Check Sum?
    A. This is basically the files fingerprint, so to speak. These are unique to every file. If they are ever the same, the file is an EXACT match of it's counterpart in question. So with that said, if the MD5 does not match, DO NOT use it. If you do, the risk is on you.

I posted this in response to a question in the General section and just thought I'd post it here in case anyone found it helpful. It's the method I'm currently using to test battery drain with various radio/RIL combinations. If anyone thinks I'm smoking crack or has a suggestion to improve this method, by all means let me know.

    *******************************************

Another unscientific method that will give you a decent indication of determining just the raw idle cell radio draw is:

    1. download and install Battery Monitor Widget (it's a free download on the Market)
    2. disable GPS, bluetooth and wifi
    3. disable background data and auto sync
    4. disable any type of automatic data polling or push notifications in your apps (email, twitter, facebook, etc)
    5. reboot your phone so that you can perform testing on a freshly loaded OS with minimal apps running.
With your phone in standby mode (screen off), let the Battery Monitor Widget monitor your battery drain for an hour or two, or longer if you've got the time. Take note of the time your phone entered standby mode. BMW displays the milliamp draw during each of its polling cycles. Here is a sample of what the polling looks like (I've got BMW polling every 3 minutes):

    2011/06/10 | 02:23:25 PM | -5mA | 79% | 3974mV | 22.0°C
    2011/06/10 | 02:20:25 PM | -1mA | 79% | 3974mV | 22.0°C
    2011/06/10 | 02:17:25 PM | -3mA | 79% | 3974mV | 22.0°C
    2011/06/10 | 02:14:25 PM | -3mA | 79% | 3974mV | 22.0°C
    2011/06/10 | 02:11:25 PM | -5mA | 79% | 3974mV | 22.0°C
    2011/06/10 | 02:08:25 PM | -11mA | 79% | 3974mV | 22.0°C
    2011/06/10 | 02:05:25 PM | -5mA | 79% | 3974mV | 22.0°C
    2011/06/10 | 02:02:25 PM | -1mA | 79% | 3974mV | 22.0°C

Observe the 3rd column; this is the milliamp drain of your battery. Now scroll down and observe all the milliamp numbers, but only for the time period your phone was in standby mode. The average of these numbers is your battery drain in standby mode with your cell radio ON.

Now put your phone into AIRPLANE mode. This will completely shut down down all the radios in your phone. Since you already had your GPS, bluetooth and wifi radios disabled from step #2 above, putting your phone into airplane mode will only additionally disable the cell radio. Now let your phone just sit in standby mode (screen off) for a while and observe the battery draw. Unless you've got an app running in the background that is using your battery, in airplane mode your milliamp numbers will probably be around -1 mA every poll, and should look something like this:

    2011/06/10 | 02:46:37 PM | -1mA | 78% | 3967mV | 22.0°C
    2011/06/10 | 02:43:37 PM | -1mA | 78% | 3967mV | 22.0°C
    2011/06/10 | 02:40:37 PM | -1mA | 78% | 3967mV | 22.0°C
    2011/06/10 | 02:37:37 PM | -1mA | 78% | 3967mV | 22.0°C
    2011/06/10 | 02:34:37 PM | -1mA | 78% | 3967mV | 22.0°C
    2011/06/10 | 02:31:37 PM | -1mA | 78% | 3967mV | 22.0°C
    2011/06/10 | 02:28:37 PM | -1mA | 78% | 3967mV | 22.0°C
    2011/06/10 | 02:25:37 PM | -1mA | 78% | 3967mV | 22.0°C

The difference in these milliamp averages between airplane mode on and off is a good approximation of your idle cell radio battery draw.

One thing I have found in my testing is that when my phone is stationary in a decent signal area, my cell radio draw is minimal (like in my example above where the draw is averaging around 4 or 5 milliamps). However when I'm driving or walking around, the cell radio drains quite a bit more juice (averages around 5-20 mA with brief spikes to 150mA). Naturally the assumption is the cell radio uses more juice as it tries to hang on to weaker signals and as the signal jumps from tower to tower as you're traveling around. I've been testing different radios and RILs to see if I can get an improvement in the "traveling around" cell radio battery drain but haven't come up with anything yet that makes a significant difference. FWIW I'm doing my testing in 4g mode.

Will this be corrected in the OP so as to not confuse fellow Inspire users? Thanks for the work a second time around!

Yes, this will be corrected. I have changed the status, to reflect that the OP is "under construction" ... The OP is getting a complete facelift. Unfortunately, this takes time, as there is a lot of info out there, and many questions through out the thread that I am going to try and cover in the OP.

I have been updating the OP, via a text doc on my PC. The OP itself will change once I have everything set up properly. I didn't wanna do one thing here, one thing there... My goal is to get it all right, then just do one massive update.
