The installer detects if you're running on a p999 or p990. The kernel command line should specify board id (p999, or p990) and I look for the p999 string and give you p999 specific install options if found or p990 ones if not. Makes me wonder what kind of recovery you have running on your phone. cuz it should have the correct kernel command line... and pretty much everyone should have one of two recoveries installed, either old style CWM or touch cwm hacked for the p999. I'm using touch so i know that work.
for the people who apparently dont see the 21y option. can you adb shell while the phone is plugged in and in recovery. cat /proc/cmdline and post the output to me. The very last thing in the output is supposed to be the board id (p999, or p990)
