Check out the instructions in the first post. No need to flash any newer version of samsung rom, just root and install clockwork then you're good to go.
Actually it doesn't sound like you correctly installed clockwork recovery. Might wanna give that a second try.
You need to flash a rooted CWM kernel with odin or heimdall, such a kernel can be found in this forum.
I had gapps fixer didn't know it was still used. I just erased it off my phone lol. Didn't wipe anything but the cache partition. I'll try the fixer.

From what I understand, all this does is root your phone and install su. You need to install Clockwork Recovery. ROM Manager will not do this for the Captivate. You need to start at the beginning and flash a kernel with CWM.

Tha custom cm9 boot screen is missing!
The option when you plug the usb is crazy!
Tell that is as a camera, and apperas the 4g icon in notification panel.

sounds like you installed a third party system UI modification (i.e. like the Reloaded package or a theme) that messed up your drawables. don't flash/install these if you want support.
Its been awhile since my last flash. I'm currently on Fasty KI2 2.3.5 with AT&T GB bootloaders. I really would like to go to an ICS ROM so I went with CM9 one since everything else is based on it.
I saw in the instructions that I can just download, wipe, and flash....is that correct? I just don't want to have a brick. Also would it be best if I went back to 2.3.5 stock first?

Just follow the instructions in the OP. Flashing CM will never brick your phone because it does not flash any boot loaders. CM also does not require any specific version of boot loaders, i897 eclair/froyo, i897 gb, and i9000 gb will all work. If the flash fails, you can use three button recovery and flash again, or in worst case scenario, boot to download mode and use odin.
I tried flashing a dif kernel on the latest nightly, and the phone won't recognize my internal sd card?
Did you get the encryption unsuccessful screen?

What are Nightly builds? Auto compiled builds of the latest CyanogenMod source from github. This version change each night and aren't officialy supported. If you find bugs/issues you can/must discuss here (do not submit nightlies bug on CyanogenMod issue tracker).

Installation
- First time flashing ICS to your Captivate (or coming from another ROM)?
- Root your device and install ClockworkMod Recovery.
- Reboot into Recovery using 3-button-combo
- Do a Nandroid backup!
- WIPE (wipe data/factory reset + wipe cache partition)
- Install the ROM from internal sdcard using ClockworkMod Recovery
- Optionally install the Google Addon
- WIPE again or Calendar Sync will not work.
- Do a Nandroid Backup!

Reporting Bugs
You are allowed to report bugs only in this thread. Before reporting a bug, please make sure you are running as stock as possible. This means no custom kernel, no custom framework modification, etc. If you are using any of the above modifications, please flash the rom again to get rid of the modifications before reporting.
- Grab a logcat right after the problem has occurred. (Please include at least a few pages of the log, not just the last few lines)
- If it is a random reboot, grab /proc/last_kmsg. (Do not bother getting a logcat unless you can get it just before the reboot. A logcat after a reboot is useless)

People get butthurt because there's two type of people in each thread. There's people that effectively read every post and come in several times a day, and there's people that just drop in and post. You fall into the second group. The first group spends so much of their resources keeping up to date on the bleeding edge that they feel offended someone like you should come in and get an answer so easily. So to make up for it they take the time and effort to post something demeaning just to assert their greater intelligence on the subject, as opposed to a simple "No" in your case. The relationship between the complexity of the question is inversely proportional to the magnitude of the outlash against you. You could have come in and asked about in-call reboots and probably gotten a straight answer (or "logcat or gtfo" if you're lucky, ya hooked a dev!), but since you asked about a stable release (which to my knowledge there are no stable CM9 builds for any device, but I know nothing outside of the devices I personally own) you got the big stick.
.....and my 5/10 flash is complete so back to regularly scheduled programming
By the way, unless your girlfriend is 84 years old, she can probably live with CM9 the way it is in the nightly builds8
