You won't have any issue with nfc or compass even if mounted to the phone or case. One thing you might want to keep in mind (if using a case) is that your phone can't be too far away (probably no further than 3/4") otherwise it won't charge.

I'm using the Zoogue Social case which is pretty thin.

I won't have any issue with the magnets mounted to the case? I thought this messed with either NFC or the compass depending on placement?

If you mount the coil high on the device it could pose some issues with nfc but my coil is mounted low (bottom half of the device). I'll try and find a picture of my case to post (I've taken a few, give me a minute) and I'll also try out a compass app to let you know.

Compass works fine, I used https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...ftware.compass this app to check. If there's a better app I can try that as well. I also used Google maps and no matter which way I turned my phone it changed the arrow to reflect my current direction.

I want to ensure that the NFC and compass will work with this mod, at least when the phone is not being charged.
The magnets are only in the touchstone. The back plate has 4 metal discs, but they are no magnets, so they will not interfere with the compass. I don't know about the NFC, but I doubt they can cause some interference since they are only four small discs, not a big plate covering all. I would be more worried about the charging coil interfering with the NFC coil, but just try the best position for it before fixing it to the back plate.

Will putting N42 magnets only on the touchstone be enough to hold the S3 in a moving car? The S3 would only have the metal discs on it's back to avoid interfering with the compass while on the go.

What charger are you using? (Both type and manufacturer). I'm seeing the same with the Energizer Qi charger which I use at the bedside at night. I've not seen the same behavior on the Anker Qi charger, but I also don't use that at night when I'm trying to sleep so it may or may not be doing the same thing. The only solution I've come up with is to setup a NFC tag and the NFC task launcher app to set a night-time profile to use zero brightness, turn the display timeout to the lowest setting and turn the alert volume down. Unfortunately, even at zero brightness and the timeout set low it still is annoying at night when it is cycling.

The compass will not work correctly while the phone is on the touchstone because of the magnetic field generated by the magnets and the charging coils.

In the car you should use a good old wired charger and a good gripping holder if you want to use the street navigator.

The compass and GPS are completely different. I currently have the touchstone base in my car and it works fine with Google navigation.
