You don't need VTS to edit .xml files. Use Notepad++ to edit text and .xml files. Use Apktool and a current apk tool set to decompile your apk's. I recommend TickleMyAndroid due to it being regularly updated and it's ease of use and the multitude of options

Hopefully this is all easier than I expected, but I was trying to install an older apk of Google Calendar on a new phone that has a locked bootloader and cannot be rooted (yet). I decompiled with apktool and got the AndroidManifest.xml file, edited it (so that it had a higher version than the one installed and wouldn't get stopped for being a downgrade), but when I tried to repack it with the apk, I got an error trying to install.

Any idea how I would repack the updated AndroidManifest.xml into the apk?

You can't modify the apk and install it as an update of official Calendar app... That's the reason why apks get signed ( well, one of the reasons)

Without root I'm afraid you're out of luck. If you can't uninstall the pre-installed Google calendar first then any attempts to update the stock google calendar app with an older unofficial/modified version will fail.

Yeah, I figured it would encounter issues with Google's end if I managed to modify anything anyway. I'm giving up and selling this phone and getting a model that can be rooted. Thank you both for your help.

Anyone that knows C# please step up? I got ahold of the source code tonight, but I have to go away for the next 3-6 months for work I can not be part of this project until then. I am well versed in C#, but I need someone to step up who also knows C# please no n00bs I need someone who has at least modified a bunch of C# b/c thats basically what you'll be doing for know. Updating the current project which you can imagine is a big project. You'll need to update the smali/baksmali versions, the apktool, and the apis which encompases a lot of files as you can imagine.. All versions of settings within the compiler itself inside of VTS and a ton of more files... So you have to be up to doing alot of work after you regular job every night, or at least a couple nights a week to help a couple of other people. Please if you want the source code message @trevorlee0201. He shared the source code with me. I will share it with as many people as I can who are serious about the project but if you write any malware or bad code into it I will have you banned from these forums I promise you that! You will need to show me or @trevorlee0201 a project or anything you worked on before I or he will share with you... I'm sorry about this, but I don't want this project to become a piece of malware that we can't track down... So only serious devs aloud! I hope @trevorlee0201 abides by this after sharing the source with me... We want to take VTS into the future now infect people as I'm sure most of you can understand. I am a serious programmer and I will know if you are a programmer who devs to infect projects. I've been on this path before many times and I've gotten a ton of you trying to write code that is garbage into a huge project we would all benefit from. So as I stated serious DEVS only! If you can't show a serious project you've worked on or modified you will be rejected. Sorry for that, but I believe we have to rules for this project otherwise it will go where we don't want it to. Thankyou guy much appreciated!

Thanks for your efforts to keep it alive . Is there a reason that you can't publish it on github or similar?

Can't find any apktool binary

Hi all,

I have been trying to use VTS lately but as I try to decompile an apk file. I get this error message :

"Can't find any apktool binary"

I have loaded into the external folder the most up to date apk tool version.

A little help is highly welcome.

Thanks a lot

VTS installs imported frameworks to the old legacy location. C:\Users/"your name"/apktool/framework.
ApkTool no longer uses this location, therefore VTS will not be able to find your imported frameworks.
So what you must do is import your frameworks either manually with command console or by using one of the currently available ApkTool utilities. (I recommend TickleMyAndroid) Apktool now installs imported frameworks to C:\Users/"your name"/AppData/Local/apktool/framework.
Once you import your frameworks you must then copy them from C:\Users/"your name"/AppData/Local/apktool/framework
to the old legacy location. But VTS allows you to name your imported frameworks so you will need to be familiar with this process so you can copy the frameworks to the old legacy location so VTS can find them. This is the problem. 100% guaranteed.

Adding new resource

Hi guys,
I just installed this cool VTS studio, configured my first project and it seems really great!
However, I'm not sure if I'm able to add new resources using it.
E.g. I need to add new .png file (I assume I'll just drop it into the folder with drawables) but how can I reference it then?
I need to somehow compile it to get hex id of this newly added resource?
Thanks in advance!

Hey mate, great fan of your Work! I was greatly inspired by it and decided to create my own IDE. That's why some of your features implementation may be exact similar to my IDE (can be found here). I've also mentioned VTS credits

Hi @trevorlee0201 @Pneuma1985

How is your work on VTS going? I use VTS a few times a year for personal uses, as a hobby (i'm a student). Currently I'm trying to decompile and modify an app from a samsung 9.0 ROM, but am having issues with baksmali. The greatest supported/working version, 2.0.3, doesn't support the dex. To use a newer version of smali/baksmali, I'd have to modify strings with arguments in the VTS itself.
I have tried decompiling ToolWrapper, editing and recompiling it (ilspy+vs2019, reflexil), but VTS just hangs after a few seconds with the new dll. I would like to ask you if you are willing to edit it for me and send me the new version or maybe give me access to the sources. I woud like to occasionally contribute to VTS.

thanks

Edit: So the hanging was caused by .net assembly (dll) signature checking which I bypassed (at system level). But I'd sill like to update VTS to be usable with newer android versions

My version is based on download from the original website.
I have however stopped using VTS and mover to VS code with APK Lab, smalise and Java language extensions. The GUI (of APK Lab) is very basic, unlike VTS, but it gets the job done.

Virtuous Ten Studio (VTS) is the ultimate solution for the modification of android applications.
This program allows you to manage entire Android projects within an easy to use and familiar environment.

The intended group of users covers anyone from a themer over ROM devs up to the smali gods known for their awesome mods of existing apks.
The modifcation of smali code is one of the biggest features in VTS. You can easily decompile, edit and recompile any apk or jar file.
However, the application is not limited to smali files. You can edit almost any file found inside an apk or jar.

Virtuous Ten Studio is also the official successor to the highly important M10Tools released 2011 by the Virtuous Team.
You can easily edit any m10 file from Sense apps in order to resize or change them.

Additionally VTS brings support for un- and repacking of boot images (boot.img), a job that previously required a cygwin installation with the dsixda kitchen.
Since VTS' own implementation is a native windows solution, which means you don't need dsixda or cygwin anymore.

VTS has been designed to run on Windows, has been in development for nearly two years and has gone through many stages of testing.

Today VTS is a highly respected, multiple purpose Android IDE (Integrated Develoment Environment) suited for all your reverse engineering tasks.

    User feedback

I've had the pleasure of beta testing and writing tuts for vts and I must say that it is the most useful, well put together program for Android that I've ever used.
I got that excited that I almost pre jacked when I first used it.
It is simply truly fxxxxng amazing.
    Thank you team and testers
Diamondback and everyone involved in this project - thank you! I just started learning (this morning) and
I am already pushing out some alpha mods to the lockscreen thanks to your tool!!
It is a great tool, and I will be using it more as I learn more.
Thank you for the effort you put into this for free, it is amazing. Keep it up! :)
VTS has done amazing, meticulous work that has enriched, massively, the android community.
    Thank you!

As someone that's been using your tools since they were first available, I give a HUGE thanks.
I have, like duce been innovative with m10 modding. There are probably endless options, through mostly trial and error.
The payoff on the end result is always worth it. I'll be more than happy when your next release is out.
I've been using VTS for over 2 months now and it has become the only tool I use. There are tremedous advantages and I'm still finding more. The java source tools are invaluable when working with xmls and smalis. I can now switch between projects with 3 clicks. Great program for modding.
This is probably by far the most useful thing I've used on windows lol
Ohh this is going to be awesome. I'm giddy with excitement. Great job on the app as a whole but with the upcoming m10 editing?
You guys rocked any other editor out of the water. Keep it up :good:
Waw.. this project is being developed very fast.... many changes in the software since the last 2 months when I tried it...

    Awesome!!!
Thanks alot for the hard work, and great job.
I want to give a huge THANKS for the Virtuous Team!
I finally released a working transparent HTC clock widget on One X thanks to the new editor.
I'm just glad that there are people out there smart enough to do this stuff! I was seconds away from getting a Samsung.
Thank you Diamond for this superb tool and updates!

Thanks everyone for this. I decompiled, made an edit, then recompiled my first skin last night thanks to this tool and my helpful huddle mates and teammates.
Great job VTS team and thanks for the many hours of hard work and testing.
Thank you very much Diamondback for all the hard work you put into this. You're the man!
I just tried it now :D And I would just say WOWWWW.....
This is awesome! [..] And again bravo for your help, HTC Sense is much sexier thanks to you
Thanks again man, I really love this :good::highfive:

Okay, everyone, we are getting ready for release. :highfive:
However, there are a few points everyone has to understand, so I'll publish them prior to the official launch to get a bit more attention. :silly:

First of all, a huge thanks to my beta testers and tutorial authors: (alphabetical order)
    • Dunc001
    • eg1122
    • Fernando sor
    • fisha21

    • mcluvn
    • memnoc
Those guys earned my trust and did the major work on writing all the nice guides and tutorials on the all new VTS website (more on that later).

Let's have a look at the new key features being added in this release:
    • VTS is now able to decompile m10 images. This means everyone can do skins for HTC Sense devices
    • Navigatin in XML documents is much easier now. Simply hold CTRL and click on any reference inside a XML document to jump to the source
    • The content of smali documents gets automatically checked for syntax errors now. Live. And in color. :p
    • We worked hard to provide you useful guides and tutorials on the new website. Additionally, VTS has a (little) help system built in. These are short explanations for a few key features. You can find everything related to "Help" in the new Help tab.
    • It seems nobody saw the potential of the old "Backup" feature, so in this version I added an additional window to easily compare different projects, folders and files. This comes in super handy when porting all kinds of stuff to new apk/jar versions for example.

Okay, so, this is only a super short list of new features, the full list of changes (almost 2 pages long) can be found (as always) here:
    VTS Changelog

    A few additional notes:
    • I changed the license system a bit to help those that had to start VTS with admin rights to find the license. However, to fully use that fix, you need to activate your license in VTS again. Have a look at your license email if you don't remember anymore how to do that.
    • This release should fully support Windows 8. There's a little glitch in the "View tab" where one checkbox is a bit cut off, but I'll fix that with the next version.
    • Speaking of the next version.... This is the last release with support for Windows XP. The next version (the one after the the one that will be released shortly :p) won't suppor XP anymore. So if you are still using XP (shame on you :p), remember to not update after this release.
    • Despite having fixed the admin issue with licenses, it still seems that VTS needs admin rights for certain other things. If something goes weirdly wrong, try restarting VTS with admin rights.
