So SanDisk has a new 128gb card. The xperia Zl is supported according to the official support page from SanDisk. The Z however isn't. Anyone have the card and can confirm this? I asked Sony and they said both phone support only 64gb. Here's the link which shows the Zl as compatible.

Both phones have same hardware, but want to be sure if it will wonk on the Z before I shell out for the chip.

I think it will run the 128gb SDXC, but not recomended or guaranteed to 100% work normally, because sony didn't officially stated it

However, the protocol is the same, SDXC and should work

Even the 2011 Xperia (Arc, Play..), that not qualify to pass SDXC, can use 64GB SDXC without a problem.

But sorry, I can't guarantee that your card can used in the xperia z.
Maybe do some test in a sandisk showroom (if there any?), or borrow from your firend, or try googling it search for who already test it.
good luck to test the 128GB card

Finally, don't forget to share here if the card works or not!

This is an article from today on ascii.jp, you could use Google Translate if you don't understand Japanese, but the gist of it is that the SONY Z1 supports the new card perfectly, then some other old phones the writer tried, even though formally not supported, will be able to use it if formatted on the device. But if there is no official support, you're basically on your own...
