I think I might have discovered a "bootloader" mode that's akin to the iPod/iPhone's DFU mode. The device shows up on the computer as "APX" when you do this procedure.

  1. Turn the G completely off, then plug in the USB cable.
  2. Hold both Volume buttons and turn on the G (keep volume up pressed)
  3. At this point, your computer should recognize a new device called "APX". The drivers for it can't be located

The Hardware ID for this device has a Vendor ID of 0955 and a Product ID of 7820.

Upon doing a bit of research, APX refers to Nvidia's Tegra platform for smartphones/MID. I downloaded the Tegra 250 development SDK here and it included the drivers for "APX".

Upon installing the drivers, the device is identified as "NVIDIA USB Boot Recovery driver for Mobile devices"

According to this Tegra Development Guide, this recovery mode is used to flash a base Android OS (when used in conjunction with the Tegra Development Kit (hardware!).

So what does this all mean? We have access to the bootloader now. If someone could rip the kernel from our current build, and some how incorporate it into a vanilla image (or the Nvidia developer's image), we could potentially flash it and liberate the G from its horrendous TapnTap UI.

Does any of this make sense? Or am I being totally incoherent?

Combination post of all firmware updates I've collected

1- Recovery image. Will allow you to back out of any changes to /system:

2- Full zPad image. This is a little risker, will wipe booloader / recovery / system to the zPad. This works, but it's a one-way trip, at the moment. Be aware of that.

3- zPad alternate build 1. Only flashes /system, so you can use bullet one to back out, if need be. Adds root, Market, changes the default language to English:
