Yep. Although I pulled the SD card before erasing storage it seems that the phone was configured with an internal SD card defined and the nandroid backup must have been stored there rather than on the external card.
Anyway, I was avoiding directly contacting afextwin, even though there was the kind offer to pm, because I hate being a nuisance - at least until I've exhausted all other options. I've got a feeling the problem is something deep in the code that doesn't get touched by external tools and apps that only the Verizon 2nd or 3rd level support folks know about. Since I don't have an account with them they won't touch it. I guess it's probably worth a quick shot to contact afextwin just in case there's something left to be done. Thanks again.
