so 88% of time more than average usage of the CPU ??

It sounds dodgy to me :)

I think it just mean that it has used 88% of the battery :D

I don't get it, are you not familiar with the battery use screen? Go to settings > about phone > battery use and you see everything that's used the battery. The fact that those percentages do not add up to 100% is irrelevant. If the display is off, it does not consume power. Instead, it will be consumed by such things as cell standby, phone idle, android system, android os etc. If the display is on, those things will still consume power.

My point is that during the blinking period, 88% of the draw on the battery was from the display. Therefore, having a blinking notification caused the phone to consume 8x more power than it would have otherwise.

I'm curious why no one else has mentioned having such an issue. Is this just my phone?

I really like this app and it's idea.
Though i'm not sure you're right with your info on the display not being completely on?
Nevertheless i have not found any discrepancies in batterylife, so i guess you're right :)

But i'd like to see any settings for it. Color, position, what to notify and the like. If you find the time and the need....thanks :)

Not sure about you, but I don't consider a notification light to be so high on my priorities list that I'm willing to give up a significant portion of my battery life for it. This was a test to see if my prior experience would be repeated, when I had the notification consume 90% or so of 25% battery in a period of 2.5 hours. I believe the goal is to have this consume a very small amount of energy. If you consider that many people may receive a significant number of messages throughout the day and are not actually checking their phone every couple minutes, it is feasible for the notification light to blink for about an hour over the course of a day. I'm not sure I want it to consume 9% of a battery that already seems hardly sufficient for everyday use.

That's great for "your" priorities. That's why everyone is different. One could also say if you're getting email throughout the day what do you need the notification "dot" for? That means you're checking it all day anyway.

I merely brought up the status indicator because as it is now (especially with people using widgets to under clock their processor and having it crash the handset) people have no way of really knowing if the handset is really on. Once that screen is black (sleeping) you can only assume it's on minus hitting the home key every so often to check, which will turn on the entire screen and use up battery.

So again, just staying objective here. Everyone has a reason and a purpose.

Issues collected 2

These issues are collected from both international version and US versions of Galaxy S:

There is some issues mentioned above that need the developer attention. Some of these issues are collected here:

1- When you use Apps that will show pop-ups on the screen at some events (like Handscent SMS or Battery indicator ) the pop-up will show on the screen because the screen is already ON. So that will consume the battery and could burn out the screen.
And there is many Apps that use pop-ups. So I think we need a fix for that issue.

>> Confirmed on both international and US version

2- I also noticed that the screen receive touch input when there is pop-ups. So that could lead to other problems like un-intended user input. Because most pop-ups contain buttons.

>> Confirmed on international version

A solution for the issue 1 & 2 could be making the "NoLED" layer the higher layer (overlay) on the screen always, then it will cover any pop-up that could show on the screen. I don't know if this is possible, but I thought I should share the idea.

3- I haven't seen anyone else mention this but I'm having issues with NoLED consuming battery. I installed it on my Captivate this morning with a fresh charge and left it sitting idle for about 3 hours. When I checked back on it, I saw the notification blinking and found my battery depleted to 76%. When I checked use, it was over 90% display with time in use of 2.5 hours. Actual use by me was less than 5 minutes, so that was all from the notification. Checking JuicePlotter confirmed that the battery was used heavily for the latter 2.5 hours, immediately after I received an email.

Not sure if this is relevant, but I have lock enabled.

>> Confirmed on both international and US version

4- In the deep dark, I can see that all the screen is ON (very few light on all the surface, but light ...)

>> Confirmed on both international and US version

5 - The "NoLED" is not working all the time. The red notification is failing to appear on the screen sometimes while the process is still showed as running.

>> Confirmed on both international and US version

For me I have to kill the "NoLED" process manually and then lock the screen and unlock it so it will start to work normally again.

I really want this app to be improved. I think it is essential for most of Galaxy S proud owners in order to them becoming even prouder.
Thanks.

am currently on a holiday and wont be able to do much improvements, but I'll definitely look into these things once am back. should be sometime in August.

thanks everybody for your feedback, I try to read as much as I can of this thread (sometimes hard to do given the internet access where am at) to keep myself up to date on the status of this little app.

I tried twice to download it to my Samsung Vibrant. Both times it refused it, saying that the content is not supported by the phone. Now what?

Is it just me or does anyone else have problems entering the pattern lock after pressing the home button? Most of the time the screen will not recognize me entering my pattern. I have to press the lock button two or three times before I can unlock it.

Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App

I fixed the issue I was having by enabling the visible pattern. With the pattern visible the app works great. If I make the pattern invisible the issues come back.

Just wanted to update my post incase anyone has this issue.

Thanks,
Cody

so imho that black screen consumes energy even it's on black. :(

I think its not about the RED color consuming too much power or the black still consumes power its about the device getting out of idle state.

but isn't that "getting out of idle state" show up in cpu usage? My cpu state was around 2-6% all the time...

Before asking questions, please read the FAQ.

    Introduction:

I saw the idea posted somewhere previously that instead of getting the capacitive lights on, we really should be putting the phone's AMOLED screen to work ! specially that it doesn't consume any backlight energy when displaying a black screen. So I developed an app that does just that: upon receiving a notification, it will display a black screen with a dot or icon somewhere in the screen. I really should put these in bullet points..

    Description:

    the application does the following:

    1. When your phone receives a notification, it switches the screen on and displays a notification. The notification bounces around every 3 seconds (changeable via an option). This will guarantee using different LEDs so that the same ones won't be burned out.

    2. You can customize whether to have a dot or an icon for each type of supported notification. Users may also customize the colors of these icons/dots.

    3. NoLED will work with SMS/MMS, Gtalk, Gmail, Missed calls, Voicemail, Calendar and K-9 (email client) without any additional permissions. Any other 3rd party software (e.g. Whatsapp, Email app, Yahoo Mail and Hotmail) will need to be checked under Monitored Apps and will require granting Accessibility rights to NoLED.

    4. The app runs as a service, after installing, you have two ways to activate the app. (a) by restarting. (b) by loading the widget into your home screen and clicking on it.

    5. To get rid of the notification screen, you may use the home or the back key. You can enable dismissal via more keys in the Miscellaneous submenu. Once your notifications are dismissed, all notifications disappear and will not come back up.

I have also logged the touch drivers and saw that although I'm displaying a black screen and setting flags to not respond to touch messages, android is still receiving touch messages when you touch any spot on the screen. This, I imagine, consumes resources! So I disabled the touch drivers when the black screen is active. Dismissing the notifications should reactive the touch drivers. If your screen is unresponsive to touch even after the notification screen is dismissed, a simple restart should take care of it. There is also an option to completely disable that feature. The touch drivers are only disabled on the Samsung Galaxy S variants, all other devices are still receptive to touch events.

Now the touchscreen drivers were a lot easier to mess around with. The sourcecode given by samsung helped me achieve the activation/deactivation of the screen. Things are not the same with the capacitive buttons. You'll notice that when the black screen is on, if you touch any of the soft buttons, they'll light up (although am suppressing them programatically). On some other devices like the Nexus S, these backlights cannot be switched off once the screen is turned on programatically. This is a bug from Google and more info is in the FAQ.

    • Changed weather provider to MSN. Google just quietly killed their APIs :(
    • Changed geolocator timeout to 90 seconds (used to be 20 seconds)

    v0.3 1/26/2012
    • Added Geolocation using Wireless networks (no physical GPS will be used).
    • -it will give up wireless location discovery after 20 seconds (will release all wakelocks).
    • -if timedout, weather will query the latest weather location on record.
    • Removed the noled weather icon from the app launcher (i personally found it so ugly and useless). Instead, you access the weather app/plug-in via the NoLED settings under toggle notifications (requires NoLED > v5.0.1b).

Google decided to pull it off due to the SMS permission it requires and I don't have any time to work around it. You can still download the apk from the OP.

I'm done coding for the day. v6.0.5b is the product of my work and it's available in the OP. Change log, as usual, is in the 2nd post.

I'll work on adding back some monitored apps features like text filtering and custom icons. With this new menu, I can easily make very fine-tuned custom settings for each monitored app. Done. get v6.0.6b instead.
