Yes, i want to root an unrooted 1.23 and I've used r6 from modaco That 1.23 is from Virgin UK.
BR.
Then you can ask on the modaco forum, because the guide also mentioned that for newer roms/bootloaders theres a guide how to downgrade, but I'm not sure if this guide really is also for flashing older roms.
Before you start to root your branded(locked) Desire you need to know how to make GoldCard

I am having no luck rooting my desire. Been trying for a while now.
Just been trying using Tiny Core. When following the instructions for rooting, I get the following message after the second step:
"sudo mount /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom"
"Mount: mounting /dev/cdrom on /mnt/cdrom failed: No medium found"
Any ideas?
Also, I can't seem to create a Goldcard in windows using any of the methods available, usually getting a message that it cannot find my device. My pc is running Windows 7 64bit, which I've heard is a problem, so how do I create a goldcard in Linux? Do I just follow the instructions after formatting the SD card to fat32?
Thanks
Try this tool for creating a Gold Card, it is easy to follow and should work ok for you before attempting to root:
LINK REMOVED AS NEW USER
Turn off your HTC desire, then turn it back on with the ‘back’ button held down. You’ll see ‘FASTBOOT’ written on the screen in a red box. Connect the phone to the computer. Thanks, managed to make a gold card using the link. I am still getting the same error message in TinyCore when trying to root the Desire though. Any ideas?
Have you put it in recovery (the screen with the red triangle) prior to connecting it to your computer?
Turn off your HTC desire, then turn it back on with the ‘back’ button held down. You’ll see ‘FASTBOOT’ written on the screen in a red box. Connect the phone to the computer.
Then in the terminal window, enter the following commands:
sudo mkdir /mnt/cdrom
sudo mount /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom
cd /mnt/cdrom/root
sudo ./step1.sh
When this step has completed, using the optical trackball, navigate to the ‘BOOTLOADER’ and then ‘RECOVERY’ option on the menu, using the volume buttons to move and the power button to select. Then, again in the terminal window, enter the following command:
sudo ./step2.sh
Followed this to the letter, the second command is where it doesn't work, as mentioned in my previous post...
Hope you have an idea where to go from here!
sudo mkdir /mnt/cdrom
sudo mount /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom
cd /mnt/cdrom/desire
sudo ./step1.sh
sudo ./step2.sh
sudo mkdir /mnt/cdrom
sudo mount /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom
cd /mnt/cdrom/desire
sudo ./step1.sh
sudo ./step2.sh
