There is an update on the BGR story about an updated driver for the Broadcom chip:

As stated in the post, many users suffer from this problem, especially the ones from later batches of shipment from Google.Totally misleading thread title... Nothing "Official" about this thread. Certainly not something every N1 owner should bother reading. My WiFi works just fine.

Good to hear that. Hopefully the new driver will be implemented into many new custom firmware and most importantly into an official google fix release. It is a known issue and Broadcom has released a fix which has already been implemented on an AOSP so unless you have a rooted custom firmware you can install this fix if not just have to wait for google to release an update on there OS that has the driver fix.
This change fixes the problem with the WiFi packets not being forwarded to the kernel when the screen is off on all phones that have a non-zero first byte in their WLAN MAC address.
this is the biggest problem for me with my n1.
although the wifi does stay awake, it slows right down..
if i ping my phone, the response time increases when the phone is asleep, but doesnt time out.
if i ftp a file from my laptop to my phone, the speed drops from 1mb/sec to 100kbps/sec when the phone is asleep.
i have found the app "fix my wifi" solves the problem of waking the phone after a few hours of sleep and finding the wifi has failed. if only there was a way of getting the speed to stay the same.
Just tried it. Last.FM keeps streaming, even after 12 minutes. My n1 was built in December.
I'm currently at 32 minutes of uninterrupted streaming audio over wifi using A Online Radio.i thought it takes much longer for the phone to kick into full sleep mode, no? like half an hour or so...
Yes they do as it's documented on google code android project.i'm starting to think that google has implemented some unique sleep mode for the wifi perhaps to save battery life. it seems like they did something to force it into suspend type mode so its still maintains the connection but in low power slower saving mode.
i think the actual wifi disconnect bug is a different yet related bug.
