Default Internal flash size

Does anyone know why our reported internal flash size is only 2GB when the phone is advertised with 4GB?

'dmesg' output:
Code:
mmcblk0: mmc0:0001 SEM04G 2.28 GiB
system+data+cache along with other smaller partitions roughly add up to this figure.

hboot and radio are roughly 25MB and 1MB respectively in size.

I found this which would mean the capacity is halved for better reliability, but in that case I don't think they should advertise it as 4GB internal storage phone...

If this is wrong section I apologize, mod please move it to the correct forum.

The android partitions are usually (sorted by size):
  • system
  • data
  • cache
  • recovery
  • boot
  • misc

The lower levels of the phone usually use (normally hidden from android):
  • bootloader (hboot)
  • radio
  • other proprietary stuff

Feel free to check partition sizes on any android phone.

My previous devices were HTC Desire (bravo) and HTC Aria (liberty) which both had 512MB nand chips and my point is that I expected much more space available to the user (me) from a 4GB phone, knowing how much space android takes. If it was at least reserved for future use (bigger ROMs etc.), I'd accept that, but not just halved like this.

"some of the storage is used by Android os" is true, Android OS uses ~980 MB on system partition on my stock ROM (a load of bloat/features ). You have about 1GB free on data partition. The remaining 2GB is missing (i.e. we have 2GB internal storage phones).
