So I just turned my wifi-only tablet (A500) into a phone and it was easy! All you need to do is use a sip/voip client such as LinPhone or CSipSimple (the one I use) and sign-up with an internet phone provider that gives you actual phone numbers.

I signed-up with WhistlePhone:

https://www.whistlephone.com/

And I got a free phone number that gives me free 20min calls to any number in the US-- and it can receive calls as well!

There are other providers out there too. If you are in Canada you can use FreePhoneLine:

http://www.freephoneline.ca/

I'm sure there are equivalent services in other places in the world.

Anyway, suffice it to say, my tablet is now a phone and it makes it that much more awesome!

Good luck!

PS: you can also install LinPhone on your Linux box and there is probably a Windows equivalent...

How'd you get the site to recognize your tablet as android? Everytime I go to the site is recognizes me as Mac OS X. And refuses to allow me to download the android version.
It doesn't matter what I set my user agent as, or which browser I use.
USELESS!

With WhistlePhone you have to download and install the client on a desktop machine in order to sign-up. Once you've done that you can extract the info from the program on the desktop and input it into your tablet. It's kinda a roundabout may to do it but after that it works great!

It looks like with FreePhoneLine you need to pay a 1-time $50 fee for the config file but after that it's free.

Next time Google Voice(Free calls and number for US calls) + GrooVe IP (4.99 app.. or free if your evil.) and with Google Voice you can make calls from your computer as well through google.com/voice with a mic/speakers.

Yeah, but Skype is a subscription service albeit inexpensive.

Its now twice what I used to be. MS bought it and doubled the service costs. Bastards. My $60 a year biz line went up to $90 a year. 60 sub, 30 incoming number.
