Thanks!

I'll try to cover some of your points as best as I can.
1. The advantage of ICS, is using the dual core processor to it's best advantage. I notice this when I play some test videos for example. They seem to run smoother, especially with some of the graphic intensive ones. More apps will be developed to take advantage of this I am sure. In turn, when Acer gets a good release, we should see better battery life. And when the kernel devs get source, we should see some undervolting as well to increase it.

Also, my volume is better than before it seems.

2. Google dropped Facelock. It just didn't work.

3. Acer ring is a cool feature. Keeps the desktop uncluttered. Yes, it's eye candy. But, it's also easy to modify images if you're a photoshop person. ;)

4. Acer Print. The polaris office app included works with acer print. It has the options to print. Also, I hear ther is a new Docs to Go available. Considering I paid for the app at one time, maybe now is a good idea to check it out!

Eventually, everybody will be running ICS. You have a good start, and won;t have to deal with some things in the future. Just be patient. I hope I can get update 501 release in the next week or 2.

MD
Thanks MD, you're right, ICS is the future and happy to hear the hardware is better managed with this version.

I actually was expecting more from ICS, that's all... But maybe too much, hein? :)

Anyway, will see how my battery reacts, because I'm also testing that between two diapers like you.... :) :)

Thanks again MD and keep on going!

Inji.

Greetings master Moscow Desire,

Is there any way to flash Alexandra IV over Alexandra III HC without having to follow this scary tutorial?

I tell you what I can do.

We have a new version bootloader now, and, a tool to turn it into a bootloader.blob. When I get time this week, I will update the rom to include the bootloader.blob, then you shouldn't have to worry about it. Will have to make sure it works first.

Also have to check on CWM recovery versions and compatibility.

So check back in a few days. Thanks!

EDIT: You will have to flash update to the latest CWM Recovery. Ver 1.7.2 at Thors site. Easy flash.

I think this is a GREAT feature to have, making it easier to install.
This is the kind of things I was eluding to in a previous post when I asked if you could be doing some other things so when they release the official ICS you have all of the other areas ready to go.

It would be fantastic to have a simplified tutorial or 1 or 2 step process to install the new stuff. Rather than you spending so much time trying to solve the 3G issue (which it seems that it's a fundamental ACER problem) perhaps you can spend that time repacking things and adding new features or more options into the ROM as well as removing their bloatware. When Acer does release the official rom then it makes it easier for you to just add your pieces to it...besides this stuff you still have young kids to play with. Go look at a photo from 2 or 3 months ago...amazing how quickly they grow :D:D:D

Thanks for your efforts on this project.

Thanks! Really, it;s just trying to share things we all have come across.

Yeah, things can get a little messed up when Acer, or any other brand, releases new operating systems. And of course they do their best to make sure we don't break security ;) . But, I think, and always have thought, "our guys are better than theirs" :D:D:D

But it always gets a little messy at first. Till things settle down. Numerous ways to deal with things, different root methods, patches, etc. Now we're at bootloaders.

A lot of guys a lot smarter than me, put a lot of time into these things. A lot of us, bounce between jobs, families, babies :D

Like I said, in the next few days, I'll put a bootloader into the rom. Should make it a lot easier to get up to the ICS stuff. But the folks will have to update their current CWM to the latest before hand. Not a biggie, I just did it tonight. Simple flash install. 2 minutes.

Speaking of babies, Alex won;t sleep.....

If I understand correctly you need to be on V4 to be able to install a bootloader.blob with cwm.
So for the future it is nice but for now everybody needs to be on V4 to have this option.

correct me if I'm wrong.

To update the bootloader is scary but if you read, reread then reread again it isn't very hard...
1.Make sure you have your ORIGINAL CPUID to get your sdk, have it in a text file for easy access and when entering, CHECK ITS RIGHT...
2. Download what you need 1st... Its a pain if you're halfway through something and realise you're missing an important app for the next step....
3. Take it slow, its recoverable UNTIL you flash the A500 ICS rom. If something isn't right don't just plow ahead anyway...
4 The last step is the easiest, I find it easier to put my A501 into APX mode manually instead of using blackthund3r 's tool but the instructions are clear and it really is nothing when you get to it, like the first time you flashed a rom, it was a big deal but now you flash with no problems.

Have fun... :D

Yeah, this is what I'm trying to understand. If you're on ver4 already, there would be no reason to even think about *blob. So no reason to include it, as it's a moot point.

In other words, there's no reason to do a version4 blob flash, if you're already on ver4.

I think, What Skirlx_CZ meant, or at least from what I understood, was the ver4 is the only one that can be converted into a blob (for us n00bs), and the only version you can flash through ver 1.7.2 CWM. So that tells me, I can include the blob in the rom installs, regardless of current bootloader. Provided they have CWM that's compatible.

EDIT: Got it cleared up with Skirlax_CZ. The ver 4 with CWM, is only for future bootloader updates like Civato thought.

Sorry folks, but you'll still have to NVFlash your bootloaders to Ver4 when you want to move to a full ICS. But unless you really want to, I would wait till I get the next Acer release.

So are you going to make one then for Noobs and one or the rest of us.
I think you can provide 2 options therefore when a new person comes or if we have to flash another tablet it's easy.

What do you think?

If you read that passage you quoted you'd find that thers no point to making a noob friendly rom as you need the patched ICS bootloader to flash it anyway... If MD added te bootloader.blob file it would only work on an A501 that had already had the bootloader and recovery installed thus negating any benefit of actually making the noob rom.

You need to have the patched bootloader installed to flash a rom with the patched bootloader... I think this would actually increase a noobs chances of bricking their beloved acer as most noobs I know run headlong into trouble before fully reading the instructions... There is the rare few who actually do things right but then they wouldn't need the noob rom...

Unfortunately what would've been a brilliant idea for those of us just starting out and a bit gung-ho, isn't practical.... Bit of a shame but then that's life. You're still stuck having to install patched bootloader and installer v4 BEFORE flashing this rom... as stated here -

I'll try to put together something a bit more friendlier when I get a chance. We got some good guides already. But NVFlashing can indeed be a bit scary. A lot of this stuff most folks have never dealt with before. But it has to be done. So lets wait a few days. (Maybe Acer will be nice and drop a new build for us also) ;)

I like your thinking. You really try to see it from the beginners point of view. If we make it easier then more people will follow. You know how many threads where I asked if they could make it easier and ppl replied with why do we want to make it easier...blah blah

Flashing the Samsung Infuse looks like a pain in the rear. There thread takes forever with half of the stuff broken or does not work on non ATT models. I showed them how to do it in 2 steps. Yes, 2 simple steps but still they leave the long convoluted way posted in the sticky.

You are inclusive which seems to be kinda rare around here.

Well, thanks. I still must defend many folks who create guides. It's really a lot of stuff to squeeze into simple steps. Also we must consider country people are from as well. Sometimes things are lost in translation :D.These guys are a wealth of information and without them, we wouldn't be where we are today.

And I am positive, those guides saved a lot of bricked tabs :) :) :)

If I remember correctly, Samsung =Odin :(:(:(

Is it possible for you to build in an unlock feature for SIM unlock.
The ICS ROM from Team Hacksung for the i9000/Vibrant/Captivate come this way. They don't mention it but I pop in different SIM cards and they work.

So it was just a thought if there is something that can be done.
HTC overwrites the Data info when you put the phone in Diagnostic mode.
Someone found that info to wipe that area that contains the carriers info so they wipe it back to stock therefore it's unlocked. If you search XDA HTC Sensation Unlock it will show up first.

Yes, Samsung is ODIN but it WORKS. I have flashed over 100 phones and tablets and never an issue with it. It seems straight forward to use.
Hell, you place the CWM rom on your phone sd then use ODIN to flash a new kernel with CWM and done. Reboot it may convert to EXT4 then you pick the ROM from CWM and done, 2 steps but some ppl have 10 steps for what I learned can be done in 2:D

I'm not exactly sure where Acer keeps the carrier info for ATT and Rogers. My guess would be a separate chip on the mainboard, and not on internal memory.

I also remember, there is an ATT Rom, that used to be on Vach's site, that was shown as (used to sim-unlock). Not sure exactly what that was all about, but I believe the rom is no longer there.

bootloader v4 bug?

hello, MD.
i already install alexandra 3d with V3 bootloader and wakelock. everything when fine and smooth. and when i see there's bootloader v4, i flash it in to my A501. since then, sometime my A501 can not go online (no internet connection), altough the GSM signal is full. i check the Data setting, it's set ON. so, i'm curious is this because the v4 bootloader?

Shouldn't be. I use the version 4 and have no issues. Are you sure you flashed the correct version for the 501? there are for the 500 and 501, although I am not sure if there's a difference, but possibly.

If not, I attached the one I use to this post. It's in a .bin format, and I usually toss it in the same folder with the blackthund3r exe application.

Rom uses the Tweaked acer kernel 2.6.39.4+. Please see POST INSTALLATION procedures for Full System R/W access.

WARNING: You MUST have the hacked ICS Bootloader VER 3 or higher. Steps for installing unlocked ICS Bootloaders can be found in Civato's Bootloader and Recovery Guide

Do not install this ROM if you are on HC bootloader. If you don't know which bootloader version you have, download AcerRecoveryInstaller and run it. It will tell you. Also remember, once you go to ICS Bootloader, you can no longer run HC roms unless you go back to the HC Bootloader

PRO TIP: Copy the Evil Alex Unleashed rom to your EXT SD card first, before messing with bootloaders. Also, you must use an ICS compatible Custom Recovery which is mentioned in the same thread

Please direct all NVFlash bootloader install issues to the bootloader thread. Do not post them here.

To get the full features, and avoid issues, you MUST be on the Bootloader Version 3 or higher!!!

First off, a big THANKS to the following:
Galapagos1 - For the update dump
    Vache - For his info
Drellisdee & Skrilax_CZ - Work with ICS Bootloader
EZTerry - For your previous help and OC Kernels.
Civato - for guidance in getting Ring and Print running, and tips/images, and Kernels. I owe him a lot with modding roms. Without his assistance, I probably would be lost.
And the rest of the people who got these leaks running when they were first introduced.

And I want to thank everyboy who tested the TEST Rom, and reported back. I appreciate your help. You all know who you are, and you are ACES in my book. Thank You Very Much.

Change list at end of post.

    What doesn't work.
It seems Acer broke the SMS. You can send, but not receive SMS. This has only effected a few devices.
UPDATE: My sms started working properly last week. Go figure.

    SystemUI Mods
    Acer Ring
    Acer Print
    Custom Nav Buttons @55Pegasus
    Fully Deodexed
    Zip Aligned
    Full /System R-W
    Ad-Hoc support
    Tweaked kernel @Civato

    Apps Removed:

    FDUpdater
    FDUpdateService
    AcerNidus
    ApInApp
Hero of Sparta (stock Acer game and not allowed to be re-distributed)
Lets Golf (Stock Acer Game and not allowed to be re-distributed)
    Other Acer stuff.

    To Install:

    Boot to CWM recovery
    a. Wipe User Data
    b. Wipe Cache
    c. Wipe Dalvik Cache
    d. Wipe Battery Stats

    Go to Mounts and Storage

    a. Format System
    b. Format Flexrom

Go back to Install Zip from SD

    Select Evil Alex Unleashed zip

    Install and reboot when finished.

Note: please give the tablet a few minutes to settle after initial start. This allows it to build it's Dalvik Cache. You may not see the Acer Ring button at first. Allow a minute.

    Do your RECOVERY BACK-UP

    POST INSTALLATION NOTES. IMPORTANT!!!!

    - Turn USB Debugging ON in Settings/Development.

    - For Full Root /System R/W access, open your file manager and set /system to R/W. It's painless.

    - If you install any other mods, DO NOT wipe your Dalvik Cache. This may cause the Acer Ring to not function properly, resulting in re-installation of the ROM.

    - Volume. Notice that you now have 2 volume controls because of Acer Ring. If you do not have initial volume, please check the Acer Ring volume.

    - Acer Print. This has not been tested, as I lack a compatible printer.

    - Ad-Hoc should work. If not, try alternative patch at end of post.

    - Titanium Back-Up users. I do not use this app, so results may not work correctly with ICS and HC Apps. Do not restore Data from TB, and expect me to support it. TB only really works, when you reinstall the exact same rom.

    - Reporting Issues: If you get a FC on an Installed App that comes with the ROM, I may be able to help.

    - Games. I cannot promise all games will work. Nobody can. The best way, is to download the game fresh before installing any other apps.

    - Phone Apps. Don't even bother reporting it.

    - ROM Manager... see above ^

Thanks and hope you enjoy it!

Enjoy!!!! Remember, this is a STOCK ODEXED Acer build. I am not responsible if games and restored data do not function well. Although I did add the latest Busybox and custom install. Also, I used slight compression in the zip, as Acer seems to want to overbloat the rom where I can't find a server to upload. But it installs fine on my tab.

Take your time Mr. MD, Wife and children first :) We can wait, Euro opening games are waiting us ;)

Do u like football MD, If Yes, Go Russian Bear :) If Not, Go Russian Bear again :p

Ehhhh.... Go Portugal (I like the smaller countries) :D:D:D

Update. Deodex good. Problems with acer print and ring. Signing issue. Really don't want to deal with it again ;)

Few things and I'll post a beta and PM you guys on the "unofficial" beta testers.

Hello MD, would you mind to upload a smaller update file to your future release (not the whole packages)? because 400 megs is a "big" file for some user.

Just uploaded a patch on the OP and also this post.

Patch should fix some issue with Play Store downloads and Network Provider issues. Will post a new updated rom later.

It should update to ver 3d.

Hey is there a fix to get my gsp working, it's not linking at all.
    ???

Sent you a PM already Mate.

Info for any having GPS issues with not locking.

In the past 3 or 4 days, I noticed GPS was no longer getting locks on Sat's. WTH????

Of course I mess with different kernels, so figured maybe had some bad kernel files leftover. Did a fresh re-install. Got some locks (3 of 11)

Yesterday, GPS wouldn't lock so I installed Civato's tweaked kernel and all worked. Today, no GPS locks (tab was on 24+hrs). Rebooted all is fine. Locks on 7 of 12 sats.

Just some info for you all.
