On my wife's Galaxy S5 when she tries to type the first word in Japanese that begins with あ or い or う or え or う(a, i, u, e or o) the first character disappears and it's substituted by the second character.
Example:
Arigatou aあ riり gaが toと uう
She types:
"a" and then as soon as she types "r" for "ri" the "あ" dissappears and the word starts with "r".
If you type:
"a", pause for two seconds then type "r", the あ dissappears.
This behaviour is not present on my Note 3.
It happens when she uses Google Play app or Facebook app for example.
Other "local" apps like Memo or Contacts work fine.
The workaround I found :
Type the first two letters very quickly in order to maintain the first character.
Example:
ar あr
It only happens with the very first word when she start typing a message.
