Yeah, you need to access that built-in interface somehow!

So I've received my WD-01 and there is a lot to like about it. I managed to connect to my hotel's wifi and share it's connection among several devices. I had to use the web web interface though because the Airstore app couldn't seem to program it properly. In fact there are two Airstor apps, both free, Airstor pro and Airstor. The only difference I can see is that the Pro version reads most video formats and the standard version pretty much none! Maybe I'm missing something? I'm having problems reading some files though, including an avi/divx with AC3.

Thanks to the SMB tip here I was able to use my media streamers like Good Player but it's not doing any better. It seems XBMC would be the way to go but while I've been able to connect and browse the file system, but it's not seeing the actual files, video or music, odd...

How are you going to operate the WiFi disk then? You need either a WiFi mobile device or a WiFi capable PC for that.

I remember reading somewhere that it is possible to start the file copying process from SD card directly to USB harddisk via the web interface. Of course we will still need a WiFi mobile device or a WiFi capable PC to start this process. I am trying to find out whether this process, once started, can continue on its own without the need for an external WiFI user device to keep it going. What this means is that the files in the SD card are not first copied to the external WiFi user device and then to the USB harddisk, but rather done so directly.

I just wish there's a way to extend the wifi signal strength on the WD01, such as external antenna. I'd love to connect my cantenna to it and access my wifi router across the hall. Currently, the WD01 has to be very close to the router for me to access the internet.

Yes it's not the most powerful wifi device and can't cover my home when broadcasting but I've found that it does the job in hotels (or in my home) connecting to their AP so I'm wondering if there isn't a dual chip/antenna in there?

I picked up the tiny Edimax 6258n in case I ever have WiFi range issues and also because it's two Ethernet ports could come in handy some day!

I think the speed had already been tested (maybe not here) and no negative impact found, thanks for sharing your detailed testing.

Well I was at this hotel and I hadn't deemed it necessary to take the Edimax...but I should have because the RavPower struggled to keep a stable connection unfortunately. A bit odd since my iPhone didn't. The RP was showing 4/5 access points (same name so several bridges I assume) and it was only connecting (sometimes) to the weakest one. My iPhone (and laptop and android) only saw one with a good signal.

Not sure the Edimax would have done better in WISP mode but since there was also a wired connection it would have taken care of that problem.

Questions about how to stream from Ravpower RP-WD01 WiFi

I got this ravpower wifi in the mail today and I am happy and all, but the included software is slightly holding me back from doing what I wanted, which was streaming my music to my phone. I wanted to know if there is any way to use an external app to stream my music to so I don't have to use the "MobileFun" app to choose each song one by one.

I have read about this smb or samba thing but I just do not understand it or if it has anything to do with what I want, but I would just love to locally stream my music like I can to my computer, the WifiDisk shows up on my windows 7 computer under network and I can pull all the music off of it, but the device does not show up as a local device in my HTC Ones Music app which I just love and think is the best music app out there.

SO, if I could get a walk-through on how to actually get connected to this device outside of the "mobilefun" app because after reading this it seems everyone else is doing it, but I simply cannot figure it out :(

Thanks people :silly:

Am I losing the Plot

I cannot for the life of me understand how the Ravpower RP WD 01 can get such good reviews, I have been using
a PC since the days of DOS, WP-4.1, Lotus 123, & XTree-Gold. today I'm using Windows 7, Word 2000/Excel
& Opus.
I am my own webmaster running my own four websites including setting up my own Meta-Tags, yet this little white box just
does not want to behave as simple as some have suggested.

To try and see, whether at 77 years I may have "Lost the Plot". I feel the answer is NO I don't think so, as I have
since purchased the "IUSBport by Hyperdrive" and within 10 minutes I have it fully running without any problems while
agreeing it is more than twice the price but nothing but another hour or two at work won't solve

Here is a list
1 = Can not access 10.10.10.254 either on my iPad, my HTC-Desire-HD, whether I have my WiFi set to my local Router to
"Safari", or my WiFi set to the Ravpower RP WD 01 it clearly state site not available.

2 = I did finally get Airstor & Airstor Pro up and running, but was NOT able to access my SD Card and a 350GB HD, as it was
asking for the password again, having told me that the password is 11111111, I entered the 8 X 1's BUT no, I was told
that I was using the wrong password, so I called a friend who had also purchased one after reading some of the Amazon
Members recommendations,
He stated that he somehow got round the 2nd Password problem by changing it, but also stated that only because he had
read some instructions on another forum and was able to get into 10.10.10.254, we both tried to find these instructions
but no luck which is how I came here

3 = My friends wife also complained that when the Ravpower was working that an Audiobook (mp3) just kept dropping out
and stopping and starting again, the Ravpower RP WD 01. was only 2 meters away, She moved the Ravpower RP WD 01
to only 50cm = ½-Mtr and then was able to hear the rest of the Book.
4 = I suggested that with these problems it was obvious that maybe the Ravpower RP WD 01 required the updated Firmware,
now comes something that is almost impossible to believe.
The Firmware comes down Zipped, so I unzipped it, into its own folder, and ended up without one file with an .exe
extension which was strange, all I had was :

The Instructios (Which were useless in either Windows 7, iOS or Android) ( See below Salutation).
The 8MB + Software = fw-wifisdi4294w4277, if you checked it Windows 7 Windows asked you what it should use to open it,
and iOS didn't bother.
You also had an md5.txt notepad file that made no sense whatsoever
And finally an Xcel Spreadsheet that told you about all what the update was able to do,
(Seemed a lot which does mean this new firmware was vey important).

Kind Regards

Tony

Here is part of the firmware instructions, let me know if it makes sense to anyone
1> The device firmware can be upgraded by following the simple steps below.
2> Download and save the latest firmware version on your computer.
Computer I assume this means my PC or MAC
3> Click on the folder icon, search and locate the firmware file on your
computer and then click on the “Open” button as seen on the screenshot
below.
I don't see the word open
4> The latest firmware update file will appear at the bottom of the folder.
Click on the “Save” button to continue updating the firmware.
What Save button
5> Once the firmware has been installed, the warning message as seen on the
screenshot below will appear and the device will automatically reboot and
will go back into the login screen.
3.8.1 Resetting to factory default
1> Resetting to factory defaults will reset all your customized settings or
whatever changes you made back to its original settings.
2> Simply click on the radio button after the “Restore to Factory Default
Settings:” Click on the “Save” button to continue.
3> The Warning Message window will appear. The Wi-Fi SD/USB will
automatically reboot once the restoring to the factory default settings have
been completed. See the screenshot below.
Note: This process will reset the Wi-Fi SSID, and the password including
the admin password. #!/bin/sh

I think my Ravpower could be faulty

Last night I decided that there was no way I could ever get my Ravpower to do as the " Good Book" states,
So my friend asked me if I would try every effort I had tried on mine to try it on his.
The first thing I did was to press the dodgy Re-Set button I say dodgy because it is, it takes a while and your not sure how long to hold it for.

I then set the Ravpower on his WiFi and then opened "Safari" and entered 10.10.10.254 into the address line
Up came the Ravpower Software and I was able to set up his User- Name & Password, as well as update his Firmware to 2.000.158

His wife will test it later on the same Audiobook.

Got back home and no matter how long or how short or how many times I tried to Re- set my Ravpower it refused to find 10.10.10.254.

Hope all this has been some help

Kind Regards

Tony
Some say,
"If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

Engineers believe.
"If it ain't broke, its because it doesn't have enough features.".

Root password for ravpower

Has anyway tried telnet into the ravpower wd01?
My guess is that the admin account works right away.
My experience with a similar device, the Leedo w3000p is that the root password
is "20080826". Can someone please confirm that this works on the ravpower as well?

I am quite happy with the w3000p. Now with the root capability it is easy to
hack the device and add new functionality.

Cheerio.

Let me reply to myself since nobody else seems to be taking notice of this post:
I unraveled the Ravpower WD01 firmware and was able to compare the /etc/passwd file with
the one from my Leedo Wifidisk Wi-Data W3000PH USB 2.5 enclosure, and yes, the root (and admin)
passwords are indeed the same! I strongly believe that both hardwares are very similar (same SoC RT5350
processor, same 32MB RAM, same 8MB flash).

I rooted my device and installed ipkg and dropbear for ssh. I use an ext2 partition on my disk mounted
under /opt. Let me know if anyone wants more details...

All the best

Have these new Ravpower users read this thread from the start? I think "some" of your questions can be answered if you do.

Ya i have read it from the start but couldn't find anything about my question? My question was how to configure the ravpower to act as a hotspot. I have try to configure it through the web interface, had scan my ssid but when i click save nothing happen. It says limited connectivity on my wireless network connection (connected on the wifidisk)

Well if the RavPower is not connected to your home network you won't be able to surf the internet while connected to it that's for sure. I would turn on my home network off/on to see if it helps. Check passwords, check that there isn't a security on your home network that requires a button to be pressed before new devices can connect, etc...

On a related matter I finally got to try a hunch I had that you can indeed connect to the RavPower FROM a device connected to your home network (and mount it as a Samba drive) by using the IP address allocated to the RavPower by your home network. In effect it turns it into a network drive.

It really is a jack of all trades, but during a recent hotel stay I did find the WiFi to be a bit weak as it couldn't keep a steady connection to the hotel wifi when my other devices could, including my iPhone 4S, so the next time I'll be sure to pack the diminutive Edimax 6258n too. It has a stronger WiFi as well as ethernet ports if the WiFi is really too bad too use.

Thks for your reply. In fact i have turn off/on my home network but nothing happen.I don't have a password for the network, i have make it open but to be able to connect via wifi i have configure it that only the mac address i have configure can connect via wifi. I have also configure the mac address of the ravpower into my home network but still nothing.

Well it shouldn't be a problem, but just in case, I would remove the MAC Filtering to establish a first connection.

Well I just received this in the mail today and set it up using web access IP. I currently use Itsplaying app which plays all types of movie files. I can connect to the drive and see the files, but when I try to play them it states there is an error. when playing through the airstor app I have no issues.

W3000PH

Hey!

I have an enclosure similar to your's, but it's the one with the hdd enclosure.
The model is W3000PH, made by a few brands (FANTEC, NEXTAV, MACALLY, POWER 7, VOCTOR and LEEDO)

I've flashed with the Ravpower RP-WD01 firmware and now it doesn't detect the hard drive :/
Do you have any idea where can i find the original firmware?

Thanks a lot!

Recently purchased the Ravpower RP-WD01 Wireless WiFi-Disk. It is probably the best investment I have made for ALL my mobile devices. I was on the fence about what wireless wifi storage to get Seagate, Kingston Wi-drive, Airstash and lots more but decided on the ravpower. Main reason was that it had a SD card slot and USB port to connect a multitude of different storage devices. And lets be honest, how many SD cards, microsd cards, portable hard drives and usb flash drives do we have laying around? There is soooo much potential with this product and some very nice surprises that I found out that makes this wifi disk a MUST have for all the tech geeks in us.

Bonus, it doubles up as external battery pack. 3,000mah may not be a lot but it does come in handy in those critical must have a charge situations.

    Specs:

Wireless wi-fi storage and external battery pack 3000mah
    SD card slot
    USB slot

The size of the wifi disk is about the size of a portable hard drive. Slightly bigger than my S3; look at attached picture for reference.

To connect to the device you must make a wifi connection to it. It is named "WiFiSD-158E" and the password is "11111111". That is 8 ones BTW.

    Performance:

I was able to pick up a wide array of storage media. SD card, microsd in a sd card adapter, Flash drives ranging from 4gb to 32gb with many different brands. It was able to power a Seagate portable hard drive no problem while a SD card was also in the sd card slot.

Many different devices were used to connect to the wifi disk: Nexus 7, Nexus 10, Ipad 4, Acer laptop, Coby Cryos android tablet, galaxy S3, Iphone 5 and a t-mobile S2.

It says that up to 5 devices can be connected to it.

I was able to play all sorts of video files from it, divx/xvid, avi, mp4, mkv, mov.....720p,1080p. It handled it like a champ.

I connected 5 devices and tried to stream a divx file all at the same time. It worked flawlessly, no stutters, no audio drops.
Now I dunno about HD 720p or 1080p files with 5 devices trying to stream from it. Will try more tests later.

You can access your connected storage via 3 different ways:

Now, you can use the recommended mobile apps mobile fun (android) and airstor (IOS) to connect to the device to see your connected storage options. They are nice clean simple apps. Reminds me of an "ES Explorer" type file explorer. Pretty fast, smooth and it simply just works. The one thing the APP is a must for is to make it a wifi hotspot. What that means is that you can configure it to connect to your regular home internet router so that when your device is connected to it; you can still have internet access. Basically it acts like a wireless bridge for your router. Once configured you don't have to use the apps ever again.

You can even use your browser to go to "10.10.10.254" and connect via a web interface. The default username is "admin" and there is no password. You can configure it to have a password; which I did via a wizard tutorial. This is nice since you can connect your laptop to it and access the connected storage.

The last option was a little thing I figured out and was pleasantly surprised! The wifi disk can be accessed via ANY file explorer app that can make SAMBA/SMB connections! File explorers such as "ES Explorer" and "Solid Explorer" have this ability. I personally recommend solid explorer (more on that in a bit).

You just have to set it up (please see attached picture for reference).

For solid explorer press the "jump" button, then "Network" and then "SMB/CIFS" button. Jump>Network>SMB/CIFS
Now press the plus sign button at the top right. It will cause a popup that you will need to fill in the appropriate info.

Display name: can be left blank
Computer name or ip address: enter 10.10.10.254
Authentication method: can set as "Log in as guess" if you did not use the web interface to make a pass word. If you did make a password set it as "store encrypted password"
    Username: admin
password: whatever password you made via the web interface

Now you should be able use the file explorer to navigate the connected storage options:
    SDCARD-Volume1 = SD card slot
USBDisk-Volume1 = USB port connected storage

Now you don't need an extra app to use the wifi disk. Use the file explorer you love and know!

Solid Explorer is my reccomendation because it has the two pane option when in landscape mode. With the two panel mode, you can navigate to the "SD card" with pane 1 and then navigate to the "usb port" with pane 2. This will allow you to transfer files between the "sd card" and the "usb port" storage seemlessly and easily! There was a step by step guide on amazon how to transfer files between two attached storage options on the wifi disk, but this makes it sooooo much easier!

Build Quality: Seems solid, not too flimsy but quite light. Nice colored LED's that aren't too bright.

    Gripes about it:
Only comes in white; no black option. It sticks out like a sore thumb next to all my other devices. The external battery pack I bought before Xmas had a white generic apple charger which didn't go with the black external battery pack I bought.
Does not come with a wall charger; but will use any usb charger.

I do not work for RAVpower but was really impressed with their external battery pack for Xmas. Was even contacted by them after the new year to personally ask how the product was working out for me. That was a pleasant surprise. So that pushed my try the wifi disk instead of bigger name alternatives.

    Securing rp-wd01

Got a ravpower wifi disk myself last week. After playing around with it, I found some concerning security issues, especially if you want to connect your rp-wd01 to a foreign network (e.g. hotel).

I found out that all services are also exposed to the interface (apcli0) connected to the foreign network. This means that samba shares and also the telnet daemon are exposed to the foreign net.
The telnet daemon is the most concerning one, as this directly allows root access, and everybody who has read this forum (or other forums) know the root password on the device.

This means that potentially everybody can get root access to your device, being able to access your data or wipe your data for that matter.

So last weekend I have spend a short time making the device a bit more secure. It is hackish, but for now I am fine with it.

Wrote an article on my wiki, as I am not able to paste outside links (not enough posts yet) I pasted the link like this (you can figure it out):
    www [dot] isartor [dot] org/wiki/Securing_your_RavPower_Filehub_RP-WD01

I also sent that article to ravpower, so hopefully they do something with it, like having the option to secure your device better from the web interface.

@DarrenHill -- Thank you! I knew there was a way to map it easily in WIN, just hadn't had the time to figure it out :D

Are there any custom firmwares available?

    You're welcome.

To give a little more update, I spoke with them again over the weekend by email and clarified things a bit further about this nice bit of kit. Apparently there is a rev.2 version of the device due to be released in April, which will have DLNA support. They are also considering a firmware update for the rev.1 device (the one on current release that we have) to add the same functionality, but that will come afterwards and is not fully confirmed.

To the best of my knowledge there aren't any custom firmwares yet, although the root password of the device is known ("20080826") and there are others on this board who were trying to get additional functionality working on it - there are a few posts on the subject earlier in this thread. Ravpower have just released a new firmware version for the device (confusingly named 2.000.004, given the current on-device version for release is 2.000.158). There are more details on that a couple of posts above this one, see below (I got the same details in my response from Ravpower).

Indeed if anyone does know of any custom firmware for this device to add new functionality, I'd like to know too :)

---------- Post added at 09:41 AM ---------- Previous post was at 09:24 AM ----------

I'm having a problem figuring out what is the most current firmware. My device had the .158 installed

On the product page it has the following available for download
On their website at (can't post link)- support/psd-23
    fw-SD-RAV-WD01-2.000.004 modified 12/20/13

    I already had this one-
    fw-wifisd-i4294w277r2000158-2.000.158 modified 10/8/12

I'm confused by what is listed, the modified dates and the file naming scheme. Any thoughts?

BTW it let me install the .004 firmware but now I suspect that it may be an earlier one.

---------- Post added at 04:38 AM ---------- Previous post was at 03:56 AM ----------

Just got an email from RAVPower-
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thank you very much for choosing RAVPower FileHub!

004 is the customerized version for RAV Filehub and it is the latest version, which support WEP network.

Any other questions, please feel free to contact us.
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Other than the spelling mistakes I'm still a little confused. They must have changed their naming/numbering scheme and I guess WEP is what this adds. Any thoughts?

I had the same dilemma, and much the same response from Ravpower when I queried it (I was expecting the firmware update to perhaps add DLNA support, see my other post above).

Giving a quick test to .004, I see that you can also now choose the region for the wifi (which you can't under .158), but one problem I did see with .004 was that my SD card wasn't recognised by the firmware (although still fully accessible over the wifi via the device). So at the moment I've reverted back to .158, as I don't need WEP support (my network is WPA2).

For anyone that does need the older .158 firmware, you can still get it from their website under www_ravpower_com/support/RP-WD01.jsp (replace the underscores with dots for the URL - I'm too much of a noob here to be able to post URLs - haven't hit my 10 thank you's yet... ;) ) as the "firmware_update_for_Airstor_App.zip" under the tablet & smartphone section (3rd one down).

For completeness, the new .004 one is available at www_ravpower_com/support/psd-23.html (ditto noob url) under the software tab.
