Woman Finds Bone in Cereal
EUGENE, OR (KVAL/CNN) - An Oregon woman has a bone to pick with Quaker cereal after she said she found a mouse bone floating in her bowl.
"As I was taking a drink, I noticed there was something long in there, and it was not shaped like the cereal," Shea Boman-Smead said.
A pregnant Smead was finishing her bowl of cereal Saturday morning when she noticed something peculiar.
"I thought, there's absolutely no way," she said.
She said she found what looked like a bone, floating around in her bowl of Life cereal.
She contacted Quaker, and they gave simple instructions.
"You send us the box of cereal and what you found in the zip lock bag. We're going to process it and then we'll let you know," the company told her.
Although Quaker seemed apologetic, Smead doesn't think that's enough.
"I felt like that was something that needs... it was a concern," she said.
While a bone in your cereal may be disturbing, gross food finds aren't unheard of.
According to the Food and Drug Administration, animal droppings, insect heads, and even mold to a certain degree are allowed in food - in small amounts.
For example, potato chips are ok as long as at least 94 percent of the pieces are not rotted.
Noodles can have up to 4.5 rodent hairs, and cocoa beans, per pound, can contain up to 10 mg of mammal waste.
As for Smead, she doesn't plan on biting into Life any more.
"No, unfortunately. It's my favorite cereal," she said.
An attempt was made to contact Quaker about this story, but the company did not return the reporter's call.
To the people on the boards, please check your food before eating. Please.
