Strange, it worked for me. Are you starting by long pressing your desktop and clicking wallpapers, gallery, picking your picture and choosing crop from pop up menu?

I'm thinking 2 things.
1) try ESFile Explorer and mount / as r/w and try again.
2) You have another application that handles viewing pictures. See if gallery is default app for pics.
For me it worked as soon as I moved gallery.apk to system/app and changed read/write properties.
Not sure how else to help you.

11For people that enjoy the original Android applications, here are some of the applications you can use.
Included above are the following:
Browser.apk
Gallery.apk
Clock.apk
Calculator.apk
LiveWallpaperPicker.apk
All of these applications need to be moved to system/app which means root is required and make sure permissions are rw-r-r. All of these applications, listed work fine as far as I can see. Enjoy these applications. Ask for help if needed. As always please be careful.11
