Yes, I'm aware of the fact that the contact picker only shows one number for each contact. As a temporary fix, if you know the phone number to send to you can type it manually into the phone number field on the bottom left of the screen.

Okay. i think we narrowed it down. we flashed his lg optimus with the same rom as mine. but nothing changed. then we connected his phone to my pad and voila, it works. so the problem lays within the Transformer ROM. iam using the transformer rom from modaco and your app works flawless. hes using the UK 3.1 stock rom with root&superuser but without busybox and Clockwork. maybe thats helping for you to find out whats wrong.

I've uploaded a new version with some new features as suggested in earlier posts, and a couple bug fixes.

Thanks to everyone who has posted here and keep the feedback coming, it will only make the app better!

Interesting. It would be helpful to know if anybody else running the stock UK 3.1 rom is having this problem. Or if it could be root that is causing the problem. Basically if anybody else has this issue, please post or PM me your specs, or if anybody is running similar software and doesn't have the problem, please let me know. Thanks again!

No login info is required. You'll need to be signed in to your Google account on your tablet to display contact names and photos, but that is outside the scope of the app.

If possible, could you add an option to mute the phone's notification sound when it receives the initial text?

Hey howettl, going to try the new version later this day. but wanted to tell you that my friends and i found out that the app is disconecting alot. the tablet doesnt have to be in sleep like u said to behave like that. it just happens like all 5 to 10 minutes while browsing or playing or whatever. there is no pattern. it just disconnect.

How much distance is there between the phone and tablet? I see behaviour like that when I'm at the edge of the Bluetooth range. Sometimes when I'm only one room away from the phone.

The phones and pads were in the same room at a distance of like 2-4 meters without anything between.

and also there seems to be a problem with the auto reconnect. as soon as you got disconected because you changed the room it wont auto reconnect when you reenter the bluetooth range :/

Auto reconnect only works when the service is enabled either from settings or the widget. I'll see if I can work out a way to keep checking for a device to be back in range and reconnect in that situation.

That option is enabled and also auto connect on startup is enabled.
my roomate just bite in his pad. he needed -no joke- 8 new installations and 3 bluetooth on/off on his pad and phone until he got those two to communicate over the app again. it appears that you cant reconnect only from one of them. with me its often the pad who is able to reconnect and sometimes my phone. but he always have to double check till he gets a connection.

when i press "connect to ..." on my phone it says "cant connect" when i do the same thing on my pad, it works. sometimes its the other way arround.

he on the other hand have to try it multiple times before its connected. like 3 times on the phone than 2 times on the pad and than one more try on the phone and "yeah, connected"

Edit: dont see my posts as critics, we are just trying to help with your development.

I don't feel that way. The reason I started this thread is to find these things. I can't fix a bug I don't know about! Sometimes its difficult to fix if I can't reproduce it though.
For the connection problems, whenever I had trouble with this in testing, if I cleared data in manage applications or uninstalled from manage applications this would often fix the problem. It might be an issue with how the auto-reconnect preference is saved.

Few suggestions.

First, I would highly recommend trying to go the route where you're using Google sync for this instead of bluetooth. That would also allow us to text message even without the phone near us. From using MightyText, which does this through a Chrome extension and a phone app, it's quick and works very well. This would also probably be easier on battery life and wouldn't have the connections issues with bluetooth.

Second, the UI is decent, but remove the phone number input on the bottom left. Instead create a compose button. The conversation list on the left needs to be made smaller. The left side should look like the conversation list in the default Android messaging app. Mostly, the profile picture needs to be smaller.

Same thing on the top of the conversation thread on the right. There is no need for the large picture and the name, number of the person you are talking to. This takes up way too much of the conversation area when you have the keyboard open. Instead I'd like to see the list of people you have conversations with on the left. Click their name, and then their thread opens up on the right with just the text data. Change the text format to the bubbles used in the stock android messaging app. Or I would just rip off the Google Talk UI and make it dark like yours instead.

And last, the app needs a better icon. I would use something similar to the stock android messaging icon, but maybe make it blue to match honeycomb.

Those are a few suggestions, but loving the app so much right now.

These are great suggestions. Once I work out the major bugs I will be focusing on improving the UI.
The main reason I have the currently selected contact photo and information on the right is so that you know at a glance who you're talking to. I experimented with highlighting the contact row on the left pane but had issues getting it to work properly. I'll continue to experiment until I find something better.
I like the idea of getting rid of the phone number input but its necessary right now until I get the issues with the contact picker worked out (contacts with multiple phone numbers only show one option).
The feedback is appreciated.

Edit: Out of curiosity... isn't the icon already very similar to the stock messaging icon? And blue?

Update: TexTab has been released in the market! Thanks to everyone who participated in the beta. Download links:

    - Full Version
    - Lite Version

TexTab is an SMS app for Android tablets. It allows you to connect your Android 2.1+ tablet to your Android 2.1+ phone over Bluetooth and send/receive SMS messages on your tablet as if you were sending them from your phone.
I've been working on this app for some time now and I feel that it is ready for public beta testing. I encourage everybody to download and install the app on both your phone and tablet, and please provide feedback here.

    App Features:
    - Honeycomb optimized, though not required
    - Push menu button to connect devices via bluetooth, with option to select a device to automatically connect to in settings
    - Conversation threads use your Google contact information to display contact info
    - Widget with button to enable/disable service, and displays connection information

    Known Bugs:
    - Messages not saving to outbox on some devices
    - Sometimes unable to connect from one device. Seems to fix after turning bluetooth off then on, on OTHER device.
    - Delivery reports are not always reliable, when messages are sent or received very quickly
    - Visual issues/ghosting when using Swype keyboard in portrait orientation
    - Performance issues on Samsung Galaxy Tab 7"

    Future Development/Requested Features:
    - New layout for 7" tablets
    - Wifi functionality for increased range
    - UI improvements
    - Option to sync contacts with phone rather than cloud
    - Sync sms history with phone
    - Option to mute phone notifications
    - Mark incoming messages as "read" on phone
    - Popup dialog on received message when app is not in foreground
    - MMS support
    - Ability to use existing SMS app (GoSMS, Handcent, etc) to send/receive messages on ANOTHER phone
    - suggestions?

    Installation and Use:
Download the attached zip file and extract it somewhere on your computer. Copy the extracted file, TexTab.apk, onto both of your devices. Find the .apk file using File Manager or your favourite file browser and run it on both devices to install. Once installed, you can access it like any other app, and you can long-press on the homescreen to add the widget.

Once in the app, push the menu button to connect to a paired bluetooth device. If your devices are not paired, simply make one of them discoverable using Menu Button > Make Discoverable and then on the other device use Menu Button > Connect a Device > Scan for Devices to pair the two devices and establish a connection.

Once a connection is established, the devices should show their proper views. If not, click the settings button and change the Device Type. Under settings, you can also select the option to automatically connect to a paired device on startup. You can also enable or disable the bluetooth service under settings, or by using the button on the widget.

To send a message, either type a phone number into the Phone Number... field, or tap the Send To... button to choose a contact from the cloud. Type the message in the Enter a Message... field and tap send. Received messages will automatically show up as long as the app is enabled.

I look forward to any feedback/bug reports/praise/insults you may have!

    Hi everyone!

I just wanted to give everyone an update on a few things.

It is true that I stopped working on TexTab for several months. I had many things happen in my life in a short period of time, the end result being that I just didn't have time to put into the app. Things have since settled down somewhat, and I've also started work again on the app.

I'm currently in the planning/experimental stage for a big update that will be released "when it's done". The main feature for this update will be a UI update for Android 3.0+ devices which will take advantage of the action bar, as well as hopefully provide some support for colour scheme/theme customization.

That's what will *for sure* be in the update.

Here's a list of things that I would love to put in, but depending on how much time I have to work on it, and when I decide to release the update, some or all of them might not make it in:

    - message sync with phone
    - MMS support
    - better state persistence (when leaving the app and returning to it)
    - send messages to multiple contacts
    - wifi support
    - some sort of setup wizard/step-by-step instructions for new users to perform the initial connection

I've probably forgot a bunch of additional features so if your favourite one isn't listed, don't worry. I will be scouring all my messages looking for hidden gems before releasing the update.

Some of these features might also trickle down to an update for <3.0 devices. The difficulty with this approach is maintaining support for all devices even if they are running different versions of the app. This will take time to get right.

I'm also considering a re-structuring of the free/paid feature list. I may update the free version of the app to be basically exactly what is in the paid version currently, with no expiry time. The paid version will then incorporate all of the features described above (rest assured, if you've already bought the paid version, you will automatically gain access to the new features). This is a definite maybe.

And finally, if anybody is still reading, I'd like to get an idea for how many of you are currently using, or plan to use, devices which run Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich). There is a feature included in the most recent update called Wifi Direct, which basically allows the connection of two devices over wifi without the need to be connected to a wireless network. This sounds like a great fit for TexTab but I'm just not sure how many users would be able to take advantage of it this early in the game. This feature would require both phone and tablet to be running ICS.

Thanks everyone for for their amazing support! I get a lot of emails and other messages, and while it is sometimes difficult to respond to every one of them, I do read them all.

    Happy texting!

Hi, just wanted to say thanks for this genius app!

I was Googling around for an app that does this... and here it is. Tested the lite version for about 5 minutes, and then bought the full one straight away.

Working flawlessly between galaxy s II i9100 and a HP touchpad on CM7.1 alpha 2.1.

I have a suggestion, when I select a number to SMS, it automatically formats the number ###-###-#### but when I recieve a reply, it doesn't. This results in two threads for the one conversation. Here in Australia, our numbers are formatted ########## with no hyphens. I believe this is set in SMS apps by the locale.

    Once again, thanks!

I wasn't aware of this problem but have dealt with similar issues related to number formatting for other countries.

I'll be sure to take a look at it. Thanks!
