I would recommend you try to get the proper Samsung drivers working on your pc before you drive yourself crazy. Your problem may be you have the wrong version of the drivers. If all else fails you can try installing latest Kies (Yuck) - which also as the driver.
Incidentally I recently tried to go from working on my Note 2 to an old Galaxy S on my pc. Guess what? Major headache! Each uses a diff version of the driver (all with same name), and it is difficult to install over an existing one - even after uninstalling it. All I can say is - make sure you have the right version, and persevere (uninstall old, reboot, install new, test). Then when you get it working, leave it alone!
