Whenever I flash the official Google OTA zip using adb sideload on twrp I get "error 7: failed to find google update binary in Meta inf" or something like that. Is there a solution for this problem?

Whenever I flash the official Google OTA zip using adb sideload on twrp I get "error 7: failed to find google update binary in Meta inf" or something like that. Is there a solution for this problem?
You can't flash ota with twrp that's not how it works. Ota must be flashed with stock recovery on an unmodified /system
I don't know how but I managed to get GPE firmware through fastboot with twrp and at the time I had a custom rom installed as well. Sure it caused a soft brick right after I installed the firmware but it worked so you know ?

I have a HTC One M7 and have read that the Android OS can be updated on it. Being an absolute noob I have no idea where to start and was hoping I could get a walkthrough, guide or tutorial on how to perform this. I really need a complete step by step guide as I don't fully understand all the jargon etc.
Also do I need to root the phone? If so then again baby steps please.
