Is not a good thing to enable swap on these devices. RAM is a volatile memory and is supposed to be something that allows a lot of writes and reads, every time, and this, applied to an non-volatile memory such as sd cards, will decrease drastically the life of them until they die definitely. This because actually the flash memory technology applied to our sd cards has a finite number of cycles of re-writes. Finished them the memory will be unusable.
Also, i see that the thoughput of my internal sd card is something like ~30/10 MB/s (read/write), not as good as a real RAM.
I think you're seeing 488 only because the manufacturers are assuming that 512MB are not the real "MB" (MiB). they assume 1KB as 1000B and not 1024B. If you do the calculation you will find 488MB instead of 512MB.
512MB * 1000 = 512000KB
512000KB * 1000 = 512000000B
512000000B / 1024 = 500000KiB
500000KiB / 1024 = ~488MiB

Mine is 376.54MB according to Android Assistant, my ROM is 1.88GB. I'm pretty sure that's normal for my stock device.

I've been told it's not good to use SWAP on these, but was never really told why.
But your explanation makes sense.
The reality of it sucks.. but it does make sense. :/
So now I've removed "RAMEXPANDER"..
Which was fast becomeing one of myfavorite apps..

That was really easy, One of myfirst setups.
It's just go launcher ex, (play store)
samsung galaxy s music widget (play store)
wallpaper was something I cropped from a friend on deviantArt
the dock is just a .png image
the dock text icons are just "birdman reflective icons"
and the rest of the icons are just some icons png's i got from deviantart and assigned them to different Elixir 2 shortcut widgets.
don;t remember the clokc widget though... probably "clockQ"
Im sure I still have all the stuff from it on file if you wanted it.

I didnt want a 3rd party launcher (too heavy for Samsung galaxy player), but I did want to customize it to my liking (Not Rooted) showing my anticipation for GTA V ;D

I've been using Go Launcher for just about a year on my Galaxy Player, and it's not 'too heavy' at all.
It's very quick and speedy, my player seems to handle it just fine.

For the two widgets you need UCCW from google play, install it and import the attached skins (extract the rar first)
The icons are from Metro Station (Play store), I gimped them to add some cyan.
The line of dockbar is created simply by UCCW: draw the lines and then save as image. On Go Launcher you can load it.

5Time this thread had a little life. I actually made this design a long time ago, but just got around to sharing it. (I know, I'm sooo lazy!) Basically, I put the google search app in the center of the whole UI, so I can get to anything super quick (much quicker than flipping through pages and pages of apps in the app drawer). As you can guess, the clock and arrows are stationary.
