My s4 has been acting very weird lately. The button combo (vol up+home+power) doesn't work for me. If i try it, it goes straight to download mode. I get no gs4 splash acreen. Only way to boot into recovery is through goo manager. BUTTON COMBO DOES NOT WORK!

If I restart the phone through the power menu it only boots into download mode. If I turn off the phone through the power menu, it will turn off for a second, and then boot into download Mode as long as the battery is in. Only way it reboots regularly is when I get into recovery through goo manager and selecting reboot system.

Only other way to boot the system is doing button combo for download mode and hitting cancel when the screen comes up.

I made a thread about this a couple days ago and was advised to Odin back to stock, which I did. Problem is still there.

The phone did turn off and stay off for about an hour, then the download mode thing came back. This is driving me crazy.

Has ANYONE run into this problem? It can't be just me, my luck can't be that bad.

If it matters, I'm running rooted stock 4.2(MDL) with twrp v2.6.3.1 installed

It definitely is a hardware problem!! I had the same issue with my s3. You can just call T-Mobile and they will send you a new one for a small fee. They charged me $5 for shipping. Just tell them that your volume rocker doesn't work. Make sure you reset your counter before you send it back though:thumbup::D

Well thatblows, unfortunately I'm halfway around the world, so I won't be able to get a replacement anytime soon.

So I should just tell them that the rocker doesn't work and they will send a replacement? I've had the phone since it first came out, they won't ask questions? Dont want to be denied and assed out.

Usually when the device has hardware issues the carrier will replace it for free. I'm not sure how long the warranty is from Samsung. I believe it's a year warranty for phones which covers hardware problems. This is what a T-Mobile representative told me. If your phone is insured through your carrier it should still be covered. I had hardware problems with my HTC Amaze and got a replacement for 5 bucks.

Thanks man, I've been trying to solve this forever.

What do you think the problem would be if is not the volume rockers? Cause I can adjust the volume perfectly fine when it's on. It just.... Keeps booting t download mode no matter what I do.

Ok I have 1 question. Did you try booting into recovery when you went back to stock? It will be the only way to really know if your phone is messed up or if it's any modifications you've done to your device.

I don't think it is hardware related. Sounds like a bad recovery image, just use Odin to flash a recovery back to the device or flash the Stock Odin 4.2.2 tar to restore stock recovery

Also, if its rooted, download Terminal Emulator, and type "su" (press enter) then type reboot recovery (press enter) should work if the recovery image is fine.

I agree about the stock image. I'm not sure if he was successful or if he tried booting into recovery when he went back to stock. I couldn't really understand in his first post but I think he may have tried it. Which is why I think it may be hardware.

I did not. But now that I think about it, after I ODINed back to stock, it did start and turn off normally once or twice.

I really don't think it is a hardware malfunction. But I'm not sure why the button combo for recovery doesn't work.

I won't have access to another computer for awhile. Plus even if I did, I don't think I could wait the 12+ hours to download the stock Odin files again.

Could I pm you in the future when I get access to my home computer?

OK. When you get on a PC you can search for the MDL stock image here on xda or the Samsung firmware page. Just make sure you choose the correct one. When you go back to stock try the button combo and see what happens. If it works you're good if not just and yourself the hassle and send your phone back.

Well I dont think it matters anymore. I got pic pocketed tonight and lost my phone. Looks like I'm getting a new one.

Maybe my phone only booting into download mode was a blessing in disguise. Cause it took me forever to figure out how to get it started, and I'm pretty tech savvy. Dont know if ****ers here in Vietnam are as tech savvy, but all my **** is locked down even if they do figure out how to get into it.

Still makes me mad though..... Err

Its not even necessary to press the home button. I just power the phone on while holding the volume up button until I see the blue writing in the upper left corner.
