First of all - thank you gdodinet for a great widget, I really like it! :)

If I may, I will add 2 RSS feeds that stopped working for me after the recent updates - now the widget shows nothing even though they pass the test when I add them...

Those are:
http://servis.idnes.cz/rss.asp?c=zpravodaj
http://servis.idnes.cz/rss.asp?c=jihlava

I tried wiping cache for the widget and setting it up as if it was the first time, however it didn't help.
Am I doing something wrong or is the problem on the SW side?

Hi. Thanks for providing those feeds: they show me that there is still an encoding issue (due to the introduction of the new parser). I will fix it asap and let you know when it's done.

1.4.0.2 has been pushed to the market. The issue you reported is now fixed (all encoding issues should now be resolved -- at least i don't have any faulty test cases). Thanks for reporting this issue; and please don't hesitate to report any further ones if any :)

thanks, it works with the attached version. i had to remove and add the widgets though (but that might be bug in zeam launcher)

Thanks for the feedback. I'm not sure why you had to remove the widget although i have observed this: i am developping against a real device (not the emulator) and everytime i push a dev version, i have to explicitely open the widget settings and tap "update configuration". I haven't investigated yet why this happens because this only occurs at development times. I wonder if this is not somehow related to the issue you encountered.

Installed the latest version from the market and now the images are showing up on the left, previously they were on the right. Where is the option to change this?

When will the text wrap around the thumbnail properly?

How can I change the default browser being used when I open an article?

There's no option to change the thumbnail, sorry. This is a feature that is asked quite a few times, but there's no simple way to achieve that given the current scrollable api (v1 is used due to LP non-compatibility with v2). I'm still thinking about a simple way to customize that.

Text wrapping won't appear so soon, i'm afraid: as far as i know, this is just not possible with android -- but feel free to correct me, i'd be glad to be wrong on that one.

To change the browser, you should open the main settings (from the widget configuration screen contextual menu or from the app drawer), and change the "Tap Action" preference.

Thank you for the information and the great app.

When the images where on the right at least there was some space between the image and the text.

How, then, can I revert to the previous version with the images on the right?

1.4.0.3

Thanks, all running smooth again for me as it was !

Thanks for your comment! I wish it were that smooth... Several users have reported feeds not loading correctly. I have been able to track that bug to a date parsing issue (can be exhibited on youtube feeds). This has been fixed and an update will be coming shortly. I hope this will be the last issue that this new parser will introduce -- this is somehow embarassing :)

Indeed there's only 2 pixels between the image and the text. I will see what i can do to improve the overall visual and readibility. In the meantime 1.3.4 can be found in my dropbox public folder, here.

Edit- 1.4.0.3 published to fix this date parsing issue

I also just published an update of the addon (0.99.1: handles authentication token expiration properly).

Hi,

I have been having issues since the 1.4 update with the widget only pulling in 1 new article. The max it will display is only 3 articles when I have the max set to 8. The 2 other articles are always from a previous date. This is apparent when all settings are on default. I have also tried to wipe the data/cache of the widget with no success.

Here is the feed I am using: http://feeds.feedburner.com/quotationspage/mqotd

Also, if I could make a suggestion: it would be nice if we had the option to specify whether to open the feed using the app or our own default browser.

Thanks for your time and excellent work.

Hi,

I understand 1.4 has been hard on users. Hopefully all those issues will be sorted out soon. I just found out about an hour ago the reason of your particular issue: while 1.4.0.3 indeed fixes the date parsing bug, there's still a remaining one: if multiple entries have the exact same date (so, including time) only one of them is shown. I will fix that shortly -- before the end of week. The feed you provided confirms this diagnosis, so let me thank you for your report.

Concerning the browser choice, it is configurable through the main settings (accessible either via the contextual menu or the homescreen app drawer) although it is an application wide preference (not per-widget based).

Yet another release (1.4.1) including a few bug fixes, notably the "same date" bug that prevented feeds from loading completely. It also includes a few improvements, amongst which the possibility to use real author name (if possible/available) and thumbnail layout improvement (+ a per-widget right position option). Please see the OP for a comprehensive list of all changes.

Please report issues with the "Use real author name" option : for instance GReader uses "(author unknown)" when the author of the article is not available, so i have hardcoded that but i fear there might be other cases/strings to also consider.

Awesome app. Can I make 2 request?

1) The ability to choose color by manual entering Hex value.

2) The ability to save settings so that when the program is updated, you don't have to re-do everything.

First of all I want to say I really like this application, but after the upgrade (now using 1.4.1) does not load the following RSS feed:
htt p://w ww.romanialibera.ro/rss/actualitate-162.xml
This problem started after 1.4.0 update.
Thanks for your work.

Hi,

Thanks for suggestions. Your first request makes sense and i'll add it to the todo list. Concerning your second point however, i'm not sure to fully understand: you shouldn't have to reconfigure anything after an update because settings are not removed. There is however a configuration import/export feature implemented in the main settings screen (see the app drawer).

Thanks for your report! I've tried loading the feed and it indeed didn't load. The problem comes from the fact that the server detects a mobile device and redirects to an html page (you could try loading it in your android browser to verify that). I've just fixed this issue by setting a custom user-agent to trick the server. And now the feed loads! I'll try to push the update tomorrow -- or saturday if i cannot do it tomorrow.

I only see where I can import/export feed settings. I'm more interested in being able to restore system settings (example would be font colors or sizes). Every time I update to the newest version, I have to go and reset the whole widget back up. It would be much easier if you could just save your widget settings and then import them once they get wiped on an update.

Man, I really love this widget! It's exactly what I'm looking for.

I would be glad for a tab-system (like browser-tabs), which separates each RSS feeds in his own section.

Thanks you so far for ya great work! :)

This is weird. Anyway here's a possible workaround: after upgrade, go to the widget configuration screen and tap "update configuration". This might do the trick.

Concerning the preferences import/export, please follow these steps:
1. Go to widget configuration screen
2. Open contextual menu (menu hard button)
3. Tap "main settings"
4. Open contextual menu
5. There you will find the import/export functions

Note: you can replace steps 1-3 by launching the "scrollabble news" directly from your homescreen launcher app drawer.

Gdodinet,
Ever since I went upto 1.4.0.3 I've been unable to get feeds from the ndtv site example http://feeds2.feedburner.com/NdtvNews-TopStories to work. It used to work with 1.4.0.2 and before. And yes, I've tried 1.4.1 too.

Thanks for your report. I just tried loading this feed and it works for me. Although i don't think so, the fact it works for me may be due to a recent change i haven't published yet. I will push a new release very soon (today or tomorrow). If you're stil unable to load the feed after upgrading to the next version, please consider sending me logs (grabbed just after a failed loading).

Thanks for your comment! Feed categorization (and the corollary: category browsing) has been asked quite a few times. I was at first a little reluctant to implement it because it would require major changes, however it is an interesting feature and as it is asked a lot, i might consider changing my mind -- not completely sure yet, and in any case this won't make it before a 1.5/1.6 release.

You're right. Now, the application works perfectly. Thanks.

    Last edit 2012-11-04: version 2.1.2.

ICS compatible [see history below]. Min compatibility: Android 3.1 (api level 12).

Source is available on google code under a GPL 3 license: http://code.google.com/p/scrollable-news-widget/source/checkout

Eclair, Froyo Gingerbread (and Honeycomb 3.0) users: please use v1.4.4.1.

Previous versions are available form google code : http://code.google.com/p/scrollable-news-widget/downloads/list

    ---

I've published yesterday [23 nov. 2010] the first version of a scrollable news widget. This is my first attempt at android development.

I've tested the widget against Launcher Pro and ADW Launcher quickly and quite extensively with Zeam. It still needs some work (amonst other things: theming, feed validation, feed lookup, ...) but it is still usable -- meaning i use it.

Since version 1.4.0 GReader and news sharing are supported through Scrollable News Addons (paid app).
The addon has been unpublished as it won't be maintained anymore. Its features will in time be integrated into the main app.

So true ... the "Scrollable news widget" is so much more neater, simpler and nicer. Feels so nice to use it and read news on this widget.

Really, wish one of the experts out here could take on this and revive it!

    1.3

    Hi,

Thanks for sharing your thoughts about scrollable widget API and LP. As it turned out, i finally decided to continue supporting LP. So i rollbacked my changes and downgraded back to scrollable api v1.

Version 1.3 has been published a bit earlier today (recent changes are listed in the first post) and is still compatible with LP. It includes some suggested improvements and a few minor fixes (most of them i had to blind code because i cannot reproduce them) .

How can I get this to get feeds from google reader?

Use greader from a pc first. And make the feeds public. Watch ur public site and click atom link on the right. Copy That link.

True but I really think better feed discovery is required. It's the only reason I don't use this widget (and I really want to!). It is just painful to set up your feeds because sure-as-gravity I don't remember each of the URLs.

Keyword search and find is required really... a search for "gizmodo" for example should return the appropriate feed IMHO.

As stated here, this will be part of 1.4. 1.4 should also add some sort of news sharing feature (i'm working on it these days).
