I think we should focus on CM10 because nightlys are being uploaded with the latest fixes by Cyanogen, by Shelnutt2.
True CM10 nightlys are rolling out, unfortunately the hero has been dropped. The support was stated to stop at 7.2. The team said that if in the future they find a workaround the "CT... something or other, the compatibility thingy" then they may resume support for the Hero and some other older devices.

For now officially the Hero will be sitting pretty at CM 7.2.

It's because of how ram heavy the system is and the lack of a gpu on the hero, also there isn't any official cm maintainer currently

No our adreno 130 gpu doesn't support hardware acceleration, we basically don't have a gpu as all gpu related stuff is handled by the cpu.
And I'll be on tomorrow, too tired now, turned my laptop off and I'm on my phone

Doesnt support Hardware Acceleration past GB*
There I fixed your statement. Its not that its not possible, its just not possible as of yet. Until Qualcomm decides to open-source the adreno 130 libs we aren't getting hardware acceleration past GB. SOOOO If you want this to happen I would recommend doing what I tell alot of people that ask "why cant we get hardware accel working?"

Email Qualcomm, and very nicely request they release of the adreno 130 lib sources so that developers can continue to bring happy faces to old devices.. Until then, we will never have hardware acceleration on CM9 or CM10.

Actually hardware acceleration wasn't possible until ICS which our GPU doesn't support as I said in my previous post, soooooo ye

Untrue hardware accl was always used in android, it wasn't till ics that they used it for more stuff, and they rewrote the HAL for it that's what caused the issue

True, but for a hardware accelerated UI, we need HC/ICS or above, but our gpu is emulated by the CPU so won't make much difference with new drivers.
