So in this individual case of the battery insertion acting as a power button depressing, it should be possible to get into any one of the modes desired by keeping any additional buttons depressed while inserting the battery.

In other words, to get into download mode press the vol up+down buttons at the exact same time the battery is inserted. it should work. My sister's evo4g had the exact same symptoms your phone does, and it worked for hers. I was easily able to boot into the bootloader, as well as recovery by following the steps I mentioned, and since it was a touch-based recovery, I was still able to flash/backup/restore, etc...I had full control over recovery, and everything worked just fine.

on second thought, download mode probably won't work with our device since you have to release the power button or it will fully boot....but fastboot and recovery should definitely work!!
thanks for your reply! I cannot boot into download mood as you say, due to not being able to release the power button. however I can get into fastboot mode (holding volume up), but cannot navigate through the options once in fastboot mode i.e. the volume up and down buttons don't do anything (i think because the power button is still effectively engaged).. so that's why I'm trying to see if I can somehow use my laptop to install a different version of cyanogenmod without needing to do anything on my phone.. that way I will be able to start the phone and at least download the app that lets me switch the volume buttons for power button!!

I have downloaded fastboot.exe but it doesn't seem to recognise my device in bootloader mode, so I'm stumped!

i have the same problem, been tweakin on it for weeks with no resolve my conclusion is the phone is screwed.....i have done every trick in the book beyond actualy replacing the power button or removing it myself and ghetto rigging it( the power button is built into the mobo) sorry about the rude and smart ass comments made by fellow members as they assume they know it all yet do not have the correct answer you seek. i have bought a new mobo on ebay and waiting for the auction to end a new mobo will indeed fix the problem yet all flashing and unlocking will be back to default(just a guess) but you could also try placing the memory module on the new mobo and see if that still has all the settings(thats what i wil be trying) nif you want send me a message and maybe with putting two heads together maybe we can fix this problem and have a solution for all other members in need(with out the need for ass hole remarks to the people who are in need) LETS DO THIS!

we all started out as noobs and in alot of aspects we still are all noobs knowledge is to be shared not held above another head and made to make others feel inferior

Janto85 i just got it to work (maybe for you aswell) what i did was put in the usb (phone auto booted towards the google screen with the unlock flashed once all leds on phone lit up then frozen) opened my command window put in command fastboot flash recovery recovery.img(have it if you need it) said waiting for device on the phone i pulled batt. then booted to boot loader(stuck with no navigation) kept taping power with vol dow...after about 10-15 clicks of power it said usb init...my command window flashed the recovery) phone rebooted back to fastboot once again kept tapping vol down and power worked after 7 clicks said usb int then rebooted back to fast boot pressed vol down worked right off the batt clicked recovery booted to recovery then recovered from my last backup worked like a charm now i have my phone bnack and working( still waiting on my mobo so i dont have this issue again) hope this helps man...still if in need send a message

Oh we ( the smart asses) have the answer. He was told what to do.

Like I said prior. There is a reason people did not help him after he quoted polobuny. When you don't listen, don't read, be a
smartass, ain't nobody going to help you.

After all I told him to do.... " I downloaded fastboot.exe and it doesn't to recognize......." smh.

Well should you the smart asses have the answer it was incorrect...you totally missed the part where he said his power button doesn't work(read on the power button issue with the nexus and galaxy it acts like its pressed in) fast boot.Odin.adb all three will not recognize during the boot you can type all the commands you want but if the computer is not reading the phone(and not due to drivers but due to hardware) your gonna get denied every time. So your solution is irrelevant unless you get the power button to register and release its "locked on" state so fast boot can initialize to fast boot USB ....now sir I'm not trying to be rude but reread the original post. I understood his first post completey as have been probably reading the same posts he has...

Yeah your right. My bad

Try and boot the phone up normally. To the point where it stalls on the cm intro. You said you see adb in device manager so issue adb devices. If that works, adb reboot recovery at that point.

Can't recall if cm comes with it turned on by default though. And not sure if your phone is making it far enough in the boot up for it to work. Worth a shot

If it does. Full wipe the Ro

Sooo... did anyone manage to resolve this? I have the exact same issue as the OP... power button stopped working under CM9, tried updating to CM10, didn't fix it, reverted to CM9, and now stuck at the loading animation. I can get into the Fastboot Mode screen by holding vol up when I insert the battery and have the USB plugged in, but the HW buttons don't work there, and the computer isn't recognizing the device via fastboot (I manually rooted a month ago so I do have all the req'd drivers AFAIK).

Any ideas?

Default Dead power button

If that can help you (at least to try to understand problem, if not to solve it...): http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...8&postcount=49
