No software update option?

hi if you are rooted with a custom recovery,you cannot receive updates from lg as it would mess your phone up, i actually thought that if you were just rooted with stock recovery and stock rom you could get and install updates but maybe verizon is different as they seem to be in a lot of respectsWhy am I not seeing a software update check in about phone? My wife has it, the only difference is I am rooted, is that why?
I am on verizon.
