I can't speak for underclocking, but undervolting makes a huge difference, and so does your governor.. Maybe you weren't setting your **** up right? But yeah my suggestion to get the best battery life is to use an aosp ROM, try tiamat out mason kernel (use smart ass v2 governor with mason), and undervolt...

you dont need to spend money on an extended battery that is huge and cant fit in your pocket anymore.

if you undervolt correctly this phone should go around 40 hours on battery, which mine does now. you can undervolt safely -75mV on the Evo 4g.

You can also try an app like BetterBattery Stats. You can get it from this XDA Thread:

You can also buy it from the Google Play store to donate to the dev.

Either way, it will show you which things are sucking down your battery. If it turns out to be your 3G data in a low signal area there isn't much you can do, but if it turns out to be some app or other service you could disable them to get back some battery life.
